Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 284, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the evening. Tonight we have what is, on paper, one of the very best fights the sport has ever produced for a main event. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski puts his pound for pound number one spot and his 12 fight UFC winning streak plus his overall 22 fight winning streak on the line when he moves up in weight to challenge for the lightweight title. The lightweight champion is Islam Makhachev on an 11 fight winning streak, current number two pound for pound, and looking for his first title defense. The two men have a combined MMA record of 48-2, Volkanovski has never lost at either featherweight or lightweight and if Volkanovski can become a double champion here it would add to a compelling case for him as an all time great while Makhachev is looking to start his own reign as lightweight champion by taking out maybe the most skilled fighter in the world. Things get a little less compelling down the card, but the co-main event is for the interim featherweight title when Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett square off, Rodriguez has been occasionally at odds with the UFC but also something of a golden boy as they wanted to develop the Mexican market and Emmett has been on a good run which has earned him this kind title opportunity. Top prospect Jack Della Maddalena is in action, still working off that 12/12 Contender Series contract when he takes on Randy Brown. Further down it’s a lot of the Oceania contingent but there’s potential for some good action.

UFC 284 comes to the world from the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. We’ve got Jon Anik, Dominick Cruz, and Michael Bisping on commentary. No Daniel Cormier is probably a good thing. As for the rules I’m not sure which set the Australian commission uses but I’m going to assume most of the newer ones though Instant Replay will almost certainly not be what it is in Nevada. If we get an update on the rules I’ll be sure to tell you. We are in the normal sized 30 foot diameter Octagon as we’re not at the Apex.

Zubaira Tukhugov had some momentum and hype around 2015 or so, but he’s fought just eight times in a UFC career dating back to 2014 and was last seen in October of 2021. Tukhugov had had issues making weight at featherweight, here he was hoping to turn over a new leaf by moving up to lightweight but managed to miss weight again and now needs a win just to try and smooth things over with the promotion. Elves Brenner is making his UFC debut on the back of a two fight winning streak and now looks for a notable win in his promotional debut. Tukhugov is a big -560 favorite to a tempting +430 comeback on Brenner.

Lightweight Bout: Elves Brenner (13-3, 155.5 lbs.) vs. Zubaira Tukhugov (20-5-1, 157.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Brenner is two inches taller with four and a half inches of reach advantage. Some feinting and circling to start, and the “woo’s” are here already, God help us. Brenner lands a leg kick. Some more back and forth movement, big of a jab from Brenner. Tukhugov avoids a few punches, but there’s not a lot going on here. A little forward pressure from Tukhugov now, he lands a right hand. Brenner with a jumping knee that lands, Tukhugov counters with a right hand. Bit of a left hook from Tukhugov, then they trade punches in close. Another left hook from Tukhugov lands, he’s got Brenner backing up. Brenner lands a couple of calf kicks but Tukhugov keeps the pressure on and lands a one two. Those leg kicks from Brenner might be adding up, he’s committing to them but he doesn’t like the pressure of Tukhugov. There’s a cut around the bridge of Tukhugov’s nose, doesn’t look too bad but it bears watching. Inside leg kick from Brenner, and that cut might actually be up more between the eyes rather than on the bridge of the nose. Tukhugov misses a right hand. Both men miss punches. Tukhugov lands a right hand. Brenner misses a right, then misses a jumping kick. They’ll just stare away the final seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tukhugov but could go either way

ROUND TWO: There are two cuts on Tukhugov’s face, one on the bridge of the nose the other up over the left eyebrow towards the middle of the forehead. Tukhugov gets back to pressing forward and lands a left hook. Brenner lands a right hand. Brenner misses a left hook but he’s looking to force the action now. Both men throw spinning kicks that don’t really land. Tukhugov misses a few punches. Some jabs from Tukhugov start landing, then a right hand as he’s backing Brenner up. Both men avoids punches. Brenner lands a left to the body then a leg kick. Bit of a right from Tukhugov. The old left hook into a right hand from Tukhugov, both land. Tukhugov lands a right to counter a leg kick, he’s starting to break down Brenner. Brenner lands an inside leg kick. Tukhugov lands a right hand. A bit of a flurry from Tukhugov, not really successful but he’s staying active. Brenner starts coming forward. Tukhugov avoids a jumping knee. Brenner misses a hook kick. Tukhugov with a few jabs then a right hand. Solid jab from Tukhugov. Bit of a spinning kick from Brenner then he misses a cartwheel kick.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tukhugov, 20-18 Tukhugov overall

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves for the last round. Tukhugov gets back to jabbing. Hard leg kick from Tukhugov, Brenner was moving into that one. More lead hand work from Tukhugov, he lands a left hook against the fence. Both men land some jabs. Stiff jab from Tukhugov. Tukhugov tries a takedown against the fence, Brenner is defending thus far and Tukhugov disengages. Brenner lands a spinning back fist. Tukhugov lands a right hand to counter a leg kick then tries another takedown, he’s able to get his hands together this time but winds up in more of a clinch. Tukhugov slips to the back standing and looks for mat returns. Brenner fights chest to chest, nice move there. Some short punches from Tukhugov and he’s got double under hooks working. Body lock for Tukhugov, he avoids a trip attempt and they break. Brenner lands a leg kick. Tukhugov with some punches then another clinch on the fence. Brenner is able to fight out of the clinch. They trade rights. Brenner jabs the body. Tukhugov lands a few jabs. Brenner misses a few strikes as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Tukhugov, 30-27 Tukhugov overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Elves Brenner via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)

OK, that 30-27 for Brenner is total crap as there’s no way he won the second round. I can see Brenner taking the first, but I’m not sure about the third though maybe if you squint really hard. Commentary buries the decision, and there’s no interview for Brenner. Seriously, what in the down under Clucky was that?

Shane Young has gone 2-3 in the UFC and is on a two fight losing streak plus he’s been out of action for nearly two years, but he’s got a chance here to pull his UFC record back to the .500 mark. Blake Bilder is undefeated coming into his UFC debut and looks to capitalize on the only chance he’ll get to make a first impression. Young is a slight -150 favorite to +130 for Bilder.

Featherweight Bout: Blake Bilder (7-0-1, 146 lbs.) vs. Shane Young (13-6, 145.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Young has four inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going. A lot of movement from Bilder right away. Young pressures forward with some jabs to the chest. Bilder misses a left hook, he’s doing a lot of stance switching in motion as he tends to stand relatively square. Young lands a jab. Calf kick from Young, Bilder does land a jab though. Bit of a left hook from Bilder. Young lands a leg kick. Bit of a body kick from Young, Bilder fires back with a left hook. Young lands a leg kick. Bilder blocks a kick and hits a body lock takedown into side control. Young gets half guard. Bilder lands a few short rights as he’s working to keep Young flat on his back. A few more short rights from Bilder. Bilder postures up and lands a few punches then Young fights to his feet and ducks under a head kick. Neither man will really connect during the final few seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Bilder

ROUND TWO: Bilder immediately goes back to dancing around, he lands a left hook then a leg kick. Young is struggling to really cut off Bilder. Right hand then a left from Young. Bilder avoids a few punches. Young lands a left hook. Inside leg kick from Bilder then he tries a takedown but Young defends this one. Bit of a left from Bilder then an inside leg kick. Young ducks under a right hand and lands a right of his own. Leg kick from Young. Bilder lands a jab. Another jab from Bilder then Young tries a takedown but Bilder immediately uses a whizzer to belly down and fight up to distance. Some jabs go back and forth. Young bulls forward and lands a few punches. Another right hand from Young lands. Bilder lands a couple of body shots. Young misses a right hand then they split jabs. Bilder lands a leg kick. Young with a jab then defends a takedown as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Young, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Bilder gets back to moving. They trade some jabs then young lands a right hand. Young blocks some kicks. Bilder misses a right hand, then Young lands a leg kick. Young lands a right hand then sprawls away from a double leg. They trade leg kicks then Young lands a left hook. Young jabs the body. Some jabs are traded. Bilder lands a couple of leg kicks, then Young returns one and lands a right hand. Bilder lands a right to counter a leg kick. Young with a combination of punches. Bilder lands some jabs then a left hook. Young lands a right hand but Bilder is starting to up the offense. Combination from Bilder, he’s really picking up the pace here. Left hook from Bilder. Young lands a left hook, then Bilder cracks him with a hard right hand. Another right from Bilder, then Young defends his takedown attempt. Young pokes with the right hand a few times. Some jabs are split then Bilder lands a left hook. Young avoids a combination then walks into a left hand. Right hand from Bilder, then he defends a takedown as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Bilder, 29-28 Bilder overall

Mic time for Bilder, who feels he could have had more volume but Young had good power and he had to fight smart. He denies jitters and feels it was more about energy management given the potential jet lag given he flew here from California.

Loma Lookboonmee has been up and down while going 4-2 in the UFC, she’s coming off of a win and is looking to build another winning streak. Elise Reed has traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in the UFC, she’s coming off of a win though and is trying to build her first UFC winning streak. Lookboonmee is a solid -330 favorite against +275 on Reed.

Strawweight Bout: Loma Lookboonmee (7-3, 115.5 lbs.) vs. Elise Reed (6-2, 115.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Reed is two inches taller with an inch and a half of reach advantage. Lookboonmee opens with some leg kicks. Reed with a blitz of punches, then Lookboonmee misses a counter elbow. Bit of a right from Lookboonmee who is generally pressuring forward. Hard leg kick from Lookboonmee. Lookboonmee lands a front kick then a right hand. Reed misses a wheel kick. Reed’s left leg is already visibly bruising up on the thigh. Lookboonmee avoids a few punches then they clinch and hit the fence. Some knees from Lookboonmee then she hits an outside trip into half guard. Reed’s nose is bleeding pretty badly as she hits a sweep into top position. Lookboonmee hip escapes towards full guard but can’t get all the way there. Reed lands a few body shots. Lookboonmee gives up the back while rolling to her knees, Reed gets both hooks in and lands some lefts from the back as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Reed but could go the other way

ROUND TWO: Reed gets back to bouncing around and circling. Lookboonmee fires a few leg kicks, then avoids a right hand and hits a mat return then gets the back with both hooks in. Lookboonmee grabs at the choke, that’s under the chin and Reed tries to fight but can’t get to the hands to break the choke and has to tap.

Mic time for Lookboonmee and her translator, she felt she lost the first round and knew she needed to win big in the second and had to get the win for Thailand. She says the plan was just to hurt her opponent.

Normally having the part of the choke where your arms connect down towards the mat like this isn’t great, you can lose chest to back pressure and struggle to adjust your grip if it’s attacked. But the initial attack from Lookboonmee was so solid and so deep around the neck that the little details don’t matter quite so much.

Jack Jenkins brings a seven fight winning streak into his UFC debut, he’s looking to extend that streak and introduce himself to the wider UFC audience. Don Shainis had a five fight winning streak snapped when he stepped up on short notice to take on Sodiq Yusuff last year, now he’s back for his sophomore outing in the promotion and looking for that all important first UFC win. Jenkins is a pretty big -390 favorite to +320 on Shainis.

Featherweight Bout: Jack Jenkins (10-2, 145.5 lbs.) vs. Don Shainis (12-4, 146 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Jenkins has an inch of height and reach advantage. Shainis lands a leg kick. Jenkins gets a clinch and fires some knees before they hit the fence. More knees from Jenkins as Shainis has him on the fence. They trade some more knees, then one from Shainis hits the groin of Jenkins so we’ve got a time out. Replay shows there was a little contact to the groin, the knee went into the thigh but the thigh of Shainis hit the groin clearly. They restart after about 30 seconds, Jenkins blocks a takedown and lands an uppercut. Leg kick from Jenkins. Shainis avoids a leg kick. Jenkins starts getting his lead hand working then digs a left to the body and a leg kick behind it. Shainis tries a double leg, Jenkins shoves him aside and lands a hard calf kick. Shainis lands a body kick. Jenkins has started switching his stance, he lands another calf kick, then a third. Body shot from Shainis. Jenkins keeps jabbing, bit of a knee from Shainis. Shainis avoids a calf kick and lands a right hand. Another right from Shainis. Jenkins fires a head kick that’s blocked. More jabs from Jenkins then they trade in close. Jenkins lands a calf kick. Shainis lands a calf kick of his own, Jenkins returns it. A final flurry from Jenkins closes the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Jenkins

ROUND TWO: Shainis lands an inside leg kick. They trade punches in close. Jenkins lands a calf kick. They clinch up and knees go back and forth, again Jenkins takes one to the groin so we’ve got another time out. Replay confirms the low blow, and the ref warns Shainis that if there’s another low blow it’ll be a point no matter the circumstances. We’re back to fighting after about 30 seconds again. Some body shots from Shainis in close but Jenkins hits a foot sweep and gets on top in half guard along the fence. Jenkins lands some lefts. Shainis wraps the head, but Jenkins gets his head free pretty quickly. Jenkins is doing a good job of controlling things but he’s not landing many strikes yet given how Shainis is still looking to move. Shainis looks to wall walk, Jenkins jumps for his back but Shainis scrambles into him and gets on top landing strikes as Jenkins wall walks into a clinch. Some punches from Shainis now, he might have a fence wrestling edge. Jenkins fires a few knees then is able to get free. Left to the body then a left hook to the head from Jenkins. Another body shot from Jenkins then a leg kick and another clinch. Outside reap from Shainis and he gets on top in full mount. Shainis with some punches, Jenkins gives up a hip and Shainis lands elbows as Jenkins hip escapes to half guard. Jenkins explodes to his feet, lands body shots then hits his own takedown to the back. Jenkins with a choke attack but Shainis defends and spins into the guard of Jenkins to end the round on top.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Jenkins but closer this time, 20-18 Jenkins overall

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves for the final round. Shainis lands a couple of punches. Jenkins with a front kick to the chest. Shainis lands a right but Jenkins slips to his back and hits a mat return. Back take from Jenkins, both hooks in. Shainis forces a scramble and gets up then they trade body work. Calf kick from Jenkins. They trade jabs then Jenkins hits a knee tap into full guard. Jenkins moves to half guard. Shainis is fishing for a kimura sweep, he’s got the grip and extends the arm, he’s got that cranked but Jenkins is able to yank his arm free. Jenkins lands a few punches as Shainis gets full guard. Jenkins moves to half guard, he’s threatening an arm triangle but the fence is complicating things. Shainis looks to hip escape but he’s working with explosion more than technique. Jenkins moves to full mount briefly but Shainis quickly hip escapes to full guard. Another pass to half guard from Jenkins. Some rights from Jenkins as he moves to the ride, he keeps firing as Shainis stands and they break. Both men swing punches, then Jenkins lands a front kick to the face that badly hurts Shainis just as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Jenkins, 30-27 Jenkins overall

I can see an argument for Shainis in the second even if I don’t love it. Mic time for Jenkins, he plays with the crowd a bit then puts over Shainis as a tough opponent with good grappling but he came to win and did so. Asked about the future he wants to fight in May or June in the United States.

Jamie Mullarkey has gone 3-3 in the UFC and now he’s got a chance to build another winning streak while getting his UFC record above the .500 mark. Francisco Prado is undefeated coming into the UFC, now he’s got a chance to remain perfect while scoring a win over a fairly proven UFC commodity. The odds are with Mullarkey at -275 to a +230 comeback on Prado.

Lightweight Bout: Jamie Mullarkey (15-5, 155 lbs.) vs. Francisco Prado (11-0, 154.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Mullarkey is two inches taller, has a notable five inches of reach advantage, and is 8 years older than Prado. Circling from both men right away. Prado blocks a high kick. Bit of an inside leg kick from Mullarkey. Mullarkey lands an inside leg kick. Both men miss rights. Leg kick from Prado. Prado lands a left hook then misses a wheel kick. Mullarkey tries a takedown, and hits the double leg into full guard. Prado fishes for a kimura, Mullarkey lands some punches to the head then elbows to the body as Prado closes his guard. Elbow from Mullarkey. Some body to head punches from Mullarkey, Prado isn’t doing much to control his posture right now. Looks like there’s a small cut around the right eyebrow of Prado. Mullarkey lands a right hand but stands as he does and Prado is up with Mullarkey on his back in the clinch. Mat return from Mullarkey then he moves into half guard. Mullarkey lands a few short elbows. Bigger elbows from Mullarkey now. Prado tries to fish for the kimura grip again, Mullarkey moves to the ride position and that’s where the round ends.

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves for the second round. Mullarkey lands an inside leg kick. Prado misses a few punches. Mullarkey lands an uppercut then a left hook. Prado misses a front kick, the range of Mullarkey is throwing Prado off. Bit of a left hook from Prado. Mullarkey lands an inside leg kick. Both men miss rights. Mullarkey with a right to the body. Prado avoids a head kick then lands a leg kick. Prado misses a spinning back kick. Mullarkey lands a right to the body but misses the follow up left hook. Prado tries a single leg, Mullarkey defends. They trade lefts. Mullarkey jabs the body. Left hook from Mullarkey in close lands, then a right to the body to follow up. Mullarkey lands a front kick to the body then a left hook. Right to the body from Mullarkey. Mullarkey lands a jab and that’ll be the last blow of the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Mullarkey, 20-18 Mullarkey overall

ROUND THREE: Bit of a left from Mullarkey. They both land rights then trade left hooks. Mullarkey lands a leg kick to the back leg, nice kick if you can land it. Prado lands a left hook in close. Mullarkey lands a jab. Bit of a right from Mullarkey, he’s really starting to flow now while remaining disciplined. They clash, then Mullarkey defends a single leg takedown. Bit of a right from Prado. Prado lands a left hook to counter some jabs. Mullarkey lands a leg kick. Nicely timed double leg from Mullarkey and he’s got Prado down into side control. Mullarkey lands a few punches while standing over Prado then returns to the mat into half guard. Prado is fishing for that double wrist lock again, Mullarkey lands some elbows to the body. Prado gets the double wrist lock, he sweeps into top position but the fence prevents the kind of motion he needs to finish and Mullarkey is able to escape and they reset on the feet. Mullarkey lands an inside leg kick to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Mullarkey, 30-27 Mullarkey overall

Nice to see the judges not screw that one up. Mic time for Mullarkey, he’s happy that he kept his cool and fought well then plays with the crowd. Asked about the kimura at the end, he says it wasn’t that close but Prado was strong and with a few missteps it could have gone wrong. Then when asked who he wants next he says Paddy Pimblett because he’s going to prove that Scousers can indeed get knocked out.

Shannon Ross has been cursed with some bad luck in terms of canceled fights over the last few years, he was last seen losing on the Contender Series but here he is anyway looking for his first UFC win. Kleydson Rodrigues suffered a loss in his UFC debut last year then had a few fights fall through, now he’s finally getting back in the cage but he did manage to miss weight and needs a win to try and get beyond the weight gaff. Rodrigues is your -345 favorite while the +285 payout on Ross might be a tempting value bet.

Flyweight Bout: Kleydson Rodrigues (7-2, 127 lbs.) vs. Shannon Ross (13-6, 125.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Ross is an inch taller while Rodrigues has an inch of reach advantage, plus of course Rodrigues missed weight. They touch gloves to get us going. Some feinting from both men, then Rodrigues lands a spinning back kick. Rodrigues is looking to keep the kicks going, then he lands a left hook. Body kick from Rodrigues hurts Ross and he looks to follow up and unload along the fence, Rodrigues misses a few more kicks but finally settles into landing body punches and Ross eventually falls which prompts the stoppage.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Kleydson Rodrigues via TKO, body kick and punches, at :59 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Rodrigues for his work this evening. No interview for Rodrigues, apparently there’s no translator for him.

Here’s the finish. Rodrigues smartly returns to body attacks as that’s where he hurt Ross, he’s a little lucky his silly spinning attacks didn’t get him countered or taken down but when he settled down the finishing flurry is very well done.

Josh Culibao has gone 2-1-1 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight winning streak and has never lost at featherweight, now he’s after his third win in a row and looking to begin establishing himself as a prospect of note. Melsik Baghdasaryan is on a seven fight winning streak including two wins in the UFC, this is historically about the time the wheels start falling off of Edmen Shahbazyan fighters so let’s see if Baghdasaryan can buck that trend and keep his UFC winning streak going. This one closed as a pick ’em with -115 on Culibao to -105 on Baghdasaryan.

Featherweight Bout: Melsik Baghdasaryan (7-1, 146 lbs.) vs. Josh Culibao (10-1-1, 146 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Culibao is an inch taller with three inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for Baghdasaryan. Both men with some feinting, Baghdasaryan keeps probing with outside leg kicks. Culibao lands a couple of leg kicks. Baghdasaryan lands a calf kick. Culibao is doing a little stance switching. Baghdasaryan lands a body kick, Culibao returns it. Bit of a one two from Culibao. Culibao lands a leg kick. Baghdasaryan has an inside leg kick checked then Culibao lands a right hand. Culibao has started checking most of the leg kicks from Baghdasaryan. They trade leg kicks then Baghdasaryan lands a couple of punches in close. Culibao’s nose is leaking after that exchange. Baghdasaryan lands a jab to the body then tries a spinning back kick that goes into the groin of Culibao and we’ve got a time out. Replay shows the kick definitely hit the groin. Culibao is in serious discomfort and the doctor is in to chat with him. After about two minutes we’re back to fighting. Baghdasaryan misses a couple of kicks to close the round.

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves for the second round. Baghdasaryan misses a few kicks. Culibao lands a leg kick. They punch into a clinch and Baghdasaryan gets away with a visible headbutt as the ref does nothing before they break. Front kick from Culibao. They both have body kicks blocked. Going kick for kick doesn’t seem like it’ll work for Culibao. Baghdasaryan fires a kick but Culibao lands a jab that off balances him, Culibao jumps on his back and grabs the choke, almost loses position but gets his hooks deep enough to control and he locks down the choke to force the tap.

Heck of a comeback from Culibao, he was behind pretty much that entire fight. Mic time for Culibao, he’s asked about the groin kick and says it was bad and the kind of blow where you have to double check that everything’s still there. He plays with the crowd and thanks the fans as this is a dream come true for him. To close he wants a post fight bonus.

Here’s the finish. This misses the drop off the jab and the positional adjustment of Culibao, but for a guy who took a bad groin shot then a headbutt this has to feel good.

Tyson Pedro has shown moments of serious promise but also suffered some losses because of poor decision making, but after taking a few years off due to injury he’s gone 2-0 since returning in 2022. Pedro now looks to get his current streak to three in a row and start taking aim at higher ranked light heavyweights. Modestas Bukauskas was cut from the UFC in 2021 after Khalil Rountree injured his knee with a side kick, but he won a couple of fights in 2022 and now looks to return to the UFC with a win. The odds are pretty solidly with Pedro at -215 to +185 on Bukauskas.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Modestas Bukauskas (13-5, 206 lbs.) vs. Tyson Pedro (9-3, 206 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Pedro has an inch of reach advantage. Southpaw for Bukauskas, and they touch gloves. Bukauskas misses a few kicks then goes orthodox. Pedro is looking for mount, Bukauskas scrambles to his knees and Pedro grabs a front headlock. Guillotine attempt from Pedro, he loses the grip but had rolled through into top position so he winds up on top in half guard. Pedro stands, tries a Rolling Thunder kick but misses and they wind up reset on the feet. Body kick from Pedro. Bit of a right from Bukauskas, Pedro looks a little slow now and might be fading. Spinning back kick from Bukauskas. They trade lefts in close as the round ends.

ROUND TWO: Bukauskas comes out looking to kick again. Pedro looks tired, that would be some poor prep work. Calf kick from Pedro. Bukauskas lands a body kick. Front kick from Bukauskas. Pedro lands another calf kick. Bukauskas starts pressing forward, and lands a right hand. Pedro tries a front kick, that hits the groin and we’ve got a time out. Unfortunate timing, Bukauskas was coming forward just as Pedro was throwing a front kick, it definitely hit the groin. Bukauskas only takes 42 seconds then we’re back to fighting. Pedro lands a front kick then a body kick. Bukauskas lands a left hook. Another calf kick from Pedro, I’m surprised he hasn’t tried the old side kick to the knee given how Bukauskas’s knee was destroyed by one. Pedro gets a clinch on the fence and fires some knees to the leg. Bukauskas gets Pedro on the fence and lands some knees to the leg and body then lands a right hand as they break the clinch. Bukauskas lands a left hook. Pedro lands a body kick but eats a couple of counter punches. Bukauskas misses a spinning kick as the round ends.

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves for the final round. Bit of a body kick from Pedro then a jab but Bukauskas counters with a right hand. Pedro avoids a spinning back kick. Front kick from Pedro. Bukauskas lands a calf kick. Left from Bukauskas. Pedro avoids a few punches then lands a right hand and forces a clinch. They break and Pedro misses a high kick. Bukauskas misses a few punches. Bit of a one two from Bukauskas. Inside leg kick from Bukauskas. Bit of a right from Pedro. Some body kicks from Pedro to keep distance. Pedro lands another body kick. Combination from Bukauskas, but Pedro gets a clinch and drives things to the fence. They break without incident and just reset. Bukauskas keeps reaching to parry the front kick with the same side hand, if Pedro has the energy that’s a great set up for a question mark kick. They clinch and hit the fence again. Some knees go back and forth in the clinch then Bukauskas lands a couple of punches as they break. Pedro lands a jab, then avoids a spinning elbow and they clinch again. Bukauskas lands punches out of the clinch then fires a head kick as the round ends.

Quick interview for Bukauskas, he felt he won the second and third rounds and feels he’s leveled up since getting cut by the UFC then puts over Australia as a location and the people.

Jimmy Crute has gone 3-3 in his last six fights but he’s on a two fight losing streak with both of those being stoppages and he’s been out of action since December of 2021, now he’s looking for his first win since 2020 as well as trying to defend his top ranking. Alonzo Menifield has gone 4-1 in his last five fights and is on a two fight winning streak, now he’s getting a shot at some ranked opposition and is trying to possibly crack the rankings with a win. Despite the momentum differences Crute is the favorite at -175 while the +150 payout on Menifield is a very tempting value bet.

Light Heavyweight Bout: #12 Jimmy Crute (12-3, 204.5 lbs.) vs. Alonzo Menifield (13-3, 206 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Crute is two inches taller while Menifield has two inches of reach advantage, Menifield is also nine years older. Menifield lands a leg kick right away. Crute with a leg kick but Menifield counters with a right hand. Pretty quick takedown from Crute and he moves to the back as Menifield wall walks. A lot of control from the ride from Crute, he’s working on keeping Menifield down. Single leg slam from Crute and he finally settles into top position in half guard. Arm triangle attack from Crute but Menifield defends. Menifield is able to push Crute up and over but Crute is right back into a takedown attempt and gets Menifield down against the fence. Wall walk from Menifield, Crute keeps the clinch and keeps looking for a takedown. Crute grabs a guillotine choke, but loses the grip as he sits for it and they scramble up then trade punches. Menifield lands a left hook. Another left from Menifield, Crute is hurt and slips on a kick. Menifield gets on top and looks to land punches, Crute threatens an armbar but Menifield defends and grabs a front headlock as Crute rolls to his knees. Now Menifield moves to the ride and lands punches but Crute is able to wall walk up. Menifield lands an elbow and a couple of rights, Crute is down but grabs a takedown and hangs on for the last couple of seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Menifield, borderline 10-8 with the near finish at the end

ROUND TWO: Menifield comes out looking to throw punches. Punches from Menifield land, Crute reaches for a single leg and avoids damage while trying to recover. Menifield defends and moves to the ride position again, landing some punches and hammer fists. Crute scoots to the fence and looks to start his wall walk. Menifield keeps working out of the ride position, Crute is able to regain his feet in the clinch though. Menifield lands an elbow in the clinch, then another one. Crute is in trouble but he’s able to get out of the clinch and starts zombie walking forward. Menifield lands some jabs then a right hand. Power left from Menifield. Menifield has gone southpaw, he sprawls away from a takedown. Crute lands a knee. Menifield lands another left hand, no idea why he’s southpaw. Menifield goes orthodox and lands a combination of punches before falling into a clinch. They fight for position along the fence, Crute looks for a takedown and is able to finish one. Menifield sits against the fence, Crute moves to the ride and lands a few short punches. Crute is fishing for the choke but Menifield is defending thus far. Crute goes for the choke, but there’s not enough time and it’s not really close as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Menifield but that one could go either way, 20-18 Menifield overall

ROUND THREE: Both men are visibly fatigued, Menifield comes out throwing punches. Crute looks to pressure forward, he walks into a jab. Both men miss left hooks, then Crute ties up in a clinch. They trade some strikes in the clinch, Crute looks for a single leg but Menifield grabs the fence to remain upright. The ref takes a point for the fence grab, I’m fine with that. Crute gets back on a takedown, but Menifield defends. Menifield is able to avoid a double leg attack. Crute tries a single leg, it takes a bit but he’s able to finish this one and get on top. Full mount now for Crute but Menifield quickly escapes to half guard. Crute moves back to full mount, there’s about two minutes left. Some hammer fists from Crute but Menifield gets half guard. Crute goes for full mount again, but Menifield scrambles. Kimura attack from Crute, he’s in side control and tries to spin for it but Menifield defends and Crute winds up in north-south. Menifield fights to his knees, Crute moves to his back without hooks in. Crute gets one hook in but he’s running out of time if he wants a finish. Menifield looks to base up, he’s up but Crute keeps the clinch to keep burning the clock and they’ll end the round in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-8 Crute after the point deduction, 28-28 DRAW overall

That point deduction was a big deal for Menifield, but I don’t hate the draw score. Mic time for both men, Crute was surprised by Menifield’s range and power and acknowledges he was hurt but never really out of it, though the speed was a surprise. Crute wants to run it back. Menifield puts over Crute and says he wants to do it again, and would be willing to do it again in Australia. Kudos to both men for having that perspective.

We get our next Hall of Fame inductee announcement, it’s Jens Pulver going into the pioneer wing. Absolutely deserved, the man did incredible work in the early days of lightweight and frankly Pulver’s frame was more suited to bantamweight or featherweight yet he made his bones as a slightly undersized lightweight. The fact that Pulver ended his career fighting at flyweight should tell you everything about his frame.

Justin Tafa has been out of action since getting a win in December of 2021 when he made history by becoming the first UFC fighter to miss weight at heavyweight, now he’s looking for his first UFC winning streak. Parker Porter just had a three fight winning streak snapped when he ran into the surging Jailton Almeida, now he’s trying to avoid his first UFC losing streak. The odds are close here but lean towards Tafa at -125 against +105 for Porter.

Heavyweight Bout: Parker Porter (12-7, 264 lbs.) vs. Justin Tafa (5-3, 266 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Porter has an inch of reach advantage, he’s also 8 years older. Southpaw for Tafa. Tafa with some early kicks, Porter looks to pressure forward. Jack Della Maddalena is on a 13 fight winning streak with three first round finishes in the UFC which has seen him emerge as the brightest prospect the welterweight division has right now, he’s looking to extend that streak and start the difficult transition from prospect to contender. Randy Brown is on a four fight winning streak and showing maybe his best form to this point in his career, but a win over the surging Della Maddalena would be a big one for him and might signal that it’s Brown who’s ready to step up in class going forward. Della Maddalena is the biggest favorite on the main card at -320 to the +265 underdog Brown.

Welterweight Bout: Randy Brown (16-4, 171 lbs.) vs. Jack Della Maddalena (13-2, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Brown is four inches taller with a notable five inches of reach advantage. Brown comes out showing the jab. Della Maddalena circles and lands a calf kick. Brown has a few punches blocked. Della Maddalena lands another calf kick, he’s just looking to corral Brown and slow him down a little bit. Brown lands a front kick. Some stance switching from Brown as he circles. Della Maddalena could switch his stance as he does so normally but he’s sticking with orthodox right now. A lot of long range weapons from Brown as he circles but he’s not not landing too much hard. Della Maddalena lands a right hand against the fence, Brown is hurt and then a follow up right from Della Maddalena drops Brown. Della Maddalena gets on top, lands punches, Brown gives up the back and Della Maddalena grabs the choke and forces the tap.

He says he works hard on his game and once Brown gave him the neck it was done, he wasn’t letting go of that. He talks us through the finish and thought this one might go long because Brown is tough. Asked about being calm in the moment he says he’s always cool under pressure. Asked about the future he says he’s got a vacation coming up but wants to fight someone in the top 15 before the end of the year, which is absolutely fair.

Yair Rodriguez has only lost to Frankie Edgar and Max Holloway during his time in the UFC, he’s coming off of a slightly odd injury related win but his general body of work over the last few years has seen him move into this position to try and earn an interim title. Josh Emmett has only lost once at featherweight and is on a five fight winning streak, his last win was a hotly contested split decision but the overall winning streak justifies his place fighting for the interim title here. The odds lean towards Rodriguez at -190 to +160 on Emmett.

Featherweight Interim Title Bout: #2 Yair Rodriguez (14-3 1 NC, 145 lbs.) vs. #5 Josh Emmett (18-2, 145 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Rodriguez is four and a half inches taller with an inch of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get us going. A lot of movement from both guys early, Rodriguez doesn’t mind showing some stance switches while Emmett is mostly orthodox only using the occasional shifting attack. A few front kicks and side kicks are shown by Rodriguez, just range finding. Calf kick from Rodriguez. Emmett keeps pressuring forward. Hard body kick and a right hand from Rodriguez, Emmett is hurt to the body but hiding it as well as he can. More kicks from Rodriguez, nothing landing but he’s staying busy and keeping range. Rodriguez lands a calf kick. Another body kick from Rodriguez then a few rights, that left body kick is money for Rodriguez right now. Emmett keeps coming forward but he can’t find the target. Both men land in close, Emmett definitely has power as Rodriguez backed off after a second. Emmett checks a calf kick then Emmett fires a few punches in close. Rodriguez blocks a few rights. Both men miss punches, Rodriguez isn’t bouncing quite as much now but he fires a wheel kick then a hook behind it, nothing lands but good luck reading this guy. Emmett lands a right hand that hurts Rodriguez, then a left that drops him and Emmett gets on top in side control. Rodriguez moves to his knees, Emmett moves to the ride and unloads with punches and hammer fists. Rodriguez looks for his guard but Emmett just lands more strikes and returns to side control. Emmett actually has a cradle working. Rodriguez is able to hip escape and get full guard. Emmett stands in the guard of Rodriguez and looks for strikes as the round ends.

ROUND TWO: Rodriguez gets back to bouncing a bit, he still prefers long range. Emmett with a right hand and a left hook in close, Rodriguez fires back with a couple of body kicks that Emmett did not like. Rodriguez keeps going for the body from southpaw, he’s killing Emmett with these and Emmett is just out of range on the counters. Emmett forces a clinch on the fence and starts looking for a single leg. Rodriguez lands a knee and slips free. Emmett is starting to wear the damage, he usually gets busted up and Rodriguez is happy to put out the damage. Body kick from Rodriguez and he avoids a right hand. Elbow from Rodriguez in close staggers Emmett, he looks to follow up but Emmett fires back and gets him to reset. Head kick and a right hand from Rodriguez. Rodriguez easily avoids a couple of rights. Flying knee from Rodriguez, but Emmett eats it and gets a takedown into full guard. Emmett has Rodriguez stuffed against the fence and looks to land strikes. Rodriguez with a few elbows from his back. Emmett lands a few short punches. Hands down the best performance ever from Rodriguez, the man was ferocious all fight. Mic time for Rodriguez, he thought about what he’d say in this moment and thanks everyone for coming out and puts over Australia as the best MMA fans in the world. He gives love to his family members who couldn’t be in attendance and gives love to Mexico. He says he’d been drilling the triangle choke a lot in preparation for this and thanks his coaches for showing him some adjustments and then puts over Emmett for landing good punches. Asked about what this means to him he says this has been a dream for years, and thanks God for everything then thanks a bunch of UFC brass. Next asked about potentially fight Alexander Volkanovski he doesn’t know when the chance will come but for now he doesn’t want to interrupt Volkanoviski’s fight and wishes the main event fighters the best.

Alexander Volkanovski is on an absurd 22 fight winning streak across featherweight and lightweight with a whopping 12 of those coming in the UFC which have seen him rise to claim the featherweight title and defend it four times, now Volkanovski is moving up to lightweight and is trying to solidify his claim as an all time great by taking the lightweight title as well. Islam Makhachev is the freshly crowned lightweight champion which he earned by tapping out Charles Oliveira in the second round of the right, Makhachev has a large 11 fight winning streak and now looks to begin establishing his title reign with a first title defense, as well as possibly claiming the top pound for pound spot with a win. The odds are with Makhachev at -380 while that +310 payout on Volkanovski has to tempt bettors out there.

Lightweight Title Bout: (c) Islam Makhachev (23-1, 155 lbs.) vs. Alexander Volkanovski (25-1, 154.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Makhachev is four inches taller but Volkanovski has an inch of reach advantage. Southpaw for Makhachev while Volkanovski opens orthodox but will switch if he feels like it. They touch gloves to get us going. Circling from Volkanovski and pawing with the lead hand, he’s feinting already. Makhachev is lightly pressuring forward, both men are just getting a read on each other. Bit of a body kick from Makhachev. Volkanovski lands a right to the body then a left hook. Some stance switching from Volkanovski now as he’s looking to confuse Makhachev. Volkanovski lands a leg kick then a bit of a left hand. A left from Volkanovski backs up Makhachev, that landed flush. Makhachev is backing up now looking to reset, Volkanovski misses a few punches then dodges the counter. Leg kick from Volkanovski. Makhachev lands a body kick and they trade in the pocket then Makhachev gets a clinch and moves to the back. Volkanovski is looking to break the grip of Makhachev, Makhachev finally gets a mat return but Volkanovski is immediately to his knees. Makhachev gets the back with both hooks in. Makhachev starts working for the choke but Volkanovski is defending without too much difficulty right now. The round will end in that position.

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves again. Volkanovski gets back to showing the jab while they move around. Makhachev is getting the outside foot position pretty reliably when they’re opposite stances. Volkanovski avoids a left hand and lands a couple of counters. Body kick from Makhachev then he avoids the counters. Right to the body from Volkanovski, then a shift left left off balances Makhachev but Makhachev turns the contact into a takedown against the fence. Volkanovski wall walks quickly but Makhachev is on his back with the hands locked again. Makhavhev pulls Volkanovski down but Volkanovski scrambles up and lands a knee. They clinch again after some punches and hit the fence. Volkanovski spins Makhachev onto the fence and lands some short lefts. They break with a knee from Makhachev. Volkanovski gets back to feinting and switching his stance. Makhachev avoids a punch. They both miss in close. Volkanovski lands a left then a leg kick. Makhachev lands a left hand that gets Volkanovski backing up. They trade in close again, Volkanovski lands a left hand then a right. Makhachev with a one two. Bit of a left from Makhachev. Volkanovski lands a calf kick, that one was mean, then a right to the body. Makhachev punches into a clinch. Volkanovski lands a few short lefts. Makhachev avoids a few punches, ties up and lands a couple of knees then they hit the fence. Volkanovski lands a few punches but has to work to fight off a takedown. Makhachev gets the takedown and moves to the back as Volkanovski wall walks. Volkanovski gets chest to chest and lands lefts in the clinch. Combination from Volkanovski on the break. Bit of left from Makhachev. Volkanovski lands an inside leg kick. Both men land lead hand punches. Volkanovski starts pressing forward, lands a right hand and sweeps Makhachev down then lands punches as Makhachev stands. Volkanovski with elbows in the clinch then knees. ROUND FOUR: They touch gloves again. Volkanovski gets back to switching his stance, he lands a calf kick. One two from Makhachev. Bit of a right from Volkanovski to the body, then they both swing in close. Makhachev lands a left hand. Volkanovski lands a right hand. They trade some jabs. Makhachev ducks under a punch and hits a double leg in open space. Volkanovski scoots to the fence, goes to stand but Makhachev jumps on the back with a body triangle. Both men land a few punches. Makhachev keeps looking to open up the choke, Volkanovski is trying to spin into Makhachev. The hand fighting from Volkanovski is impressive but he’s kind of stuck in the position. They’ll end the round in that position with Volkanovski landing some punches.

ROUND FIVE: They touch gloves for the final round, then hug. Both men show the jab again as the round begins. Inside leg kick from Volkanovski but Makhachev counters with a left hand. Bit of a combination from Volkanovski then a calf kick. Makhachev lands a knee then a left hand. Volkanovski avoids a hook and lands a right hand. Makhachev blocks a head kick. Bit of a right from Volkanovski then they tie up and trade strikes, Makhachev lands a knee coming out of it. They get close, Makhachev hits a takedown but Volkanovski immediately scrambles up into the clinch. On the fence now, then they break without incident. Volkanovski is pressuring forward again, he lands a jab. Makhachev avoids a punch, tries a single leg but Volkanovski counters with a sprawl sequence and gets to the ride position briefly then gets free. Volkanovski is coming on but he might be running out of time. Punches from Volkanovski then he clinches up and lands a left hand. Body lock from Volkanovski, he can’t get the takedown though. Outside trip from Volkanovski, can’t quite finish the takedown but he’s all over Makhachev as they break. More pressure from Volkanovski, he crushes Makhachev with a right hand and gets on top in full guard. Makhachev goes to a body triangle from the bottom but Volkanovski is posturing up looking to do damage. Short elbows from Volkanovski and body shots but Makhachev seems to be able to tie up and hold on. Volkanovski postures up and unloads with punches as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Volkanovski, 48-47 Volkanovski overall but this could go either way

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER and STILL UFC Lightweight Champion – Islam Makhachev via unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47 x2)

Can’t complain about that, I thought Volkanovski won but every round except the fourth and fifth were close. Mic time for Makhachev and he puts over Volkanovski and thinks it was a good fight, he wanted the tough opponent to make him better than thanks the crowd. He says Volkanovski was incredibly well prepared. Again he thanks Volkanovski for the fight. He says he showed why he’s the best pound for pound fighter in the world, and calls himself the best fighter in the world. Asked what he’d like next he wants a real contender and knows there are some important fights coming up in the division and gives love to the people of Syria and Turkey dealing with that horrible earthquake.

Mic time for Volkanovski who puts over Makhachev then says a lot of people didn’t give him a chance but the fight was fun and congratulates Makhachev. He says Makhachev didn’t respect his wrestling enough, but he didn’t quite respect Makhachev’s striking as they did work on each other. Now asked about fighting Yair Rodriguez, he says he just wants to stay active and wants to be back at lightweight in the future but will settle things with Rodriguez. To close he gives love to Australia, he’d have preferred to win but there’s nothing wrong with challenging yourself and he warns the featherweights that they’d better watch out, but he still feels he’s the right man to beat Makhachev and maybe they’ll settle this in the future.

Well on that note, UFC 284 comes to a close.
