Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 10. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be relaying all of the action to you good people just as I see it. There’s no getting around it guys, this isn’t a good card on paper. The UFC is trying to keep the machine turning over but given the global travel restrictions it’s still a tough ask to put together a weekly show, the result being cards like this. The main event could be a relevant flyweight fight, if Jessica Eye hadn’t missed weight for the second time in a row putting her future in the division in question. Karl Roberson and Marvin Vettori have been scheduled to fight a couple of times recently but it always fell through, well now their fighting but Roberson also missed weight. We lost parts of interesting fights along the way as well, Merab Dvalishvili was supposed to fight Ray Borg but Borg had to withdraw to deal with family issues, so we got a short notice replacement in Gustavo Lopez. We can still hope the fights are great in practice, but on paper this is pretty weak.

UFC on ESPN 10 comes to the world from the UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. On commentary we have Brendan Fitzgerald and Paul Felder while Laura Sanko takes care of reporting duties. The rules here in Nevada are a hybrid of the old and new rules, they’ve adopted most of them but you only need one hand on the mat to be considered downed and we do have the use of instant replay whenever the ref wants it. Also a reminder that at the APEX facility we’re in the smaller 25 foot cage.

Christian Aguilera brings a two fight winning streak into his promotional debut, he’s hoping to make a good first impression on the UFC audience. Anthony Ivy is also making his UFC debut though his winning streak currently stands at five, he’d also like to get his UFC career up and running with a bang. Ivy is your -185 favorite to +165 for Aguilera.

Welterweight Bout: Christian Aguilera (13-6, 170.5 lbs.) vs. Anthony Ivy (8-2, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Ivy is five inches taller and has two inches of reach on Aguilera. They touch gloves to get going. Aguilera showing hands early, both men just looking for openings. Ivy lands a leg kick. Another leg kick from Ivy lands. Ivy keeps dropping his hands when he throws that kick, something to watch going forward. A right from Aguilera wobbles Ivy, he unloads against the fence and the ref steps in as Ivy drops to a knee.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Christian Aguilera via TKO, punches, at :59 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Aguilera for his work this evening. Mic time for Aguilera, he says this is a dream come true. He mentions the short notice nature of the fight, he initially was going to replace Ian Heinisch last week, and was glad to get the extra week to make weight. He talks us through the finish and puts over his coaches for all of their work. Asked about coming back, he jokes he’ll be ready next week as he barely got hit this time.

Nice finish here. Aguilera is able to sneak the small glove around the guard of Ivy and land behind the ear. Once Ivy gets wobbled Aguilera swarms him violently for the stoppage.

Tyson Nam has yet to score a win in the UFC, going 0-2 since joining late last year, and now finds himself in serious need of a win to justify his position on the roster. Zarrukh Adashev took this fight on short notice after Ryan Benoit fell out, which probably contributed to his missing weight for this fight. Adashev is hoping a winning performance will help overcome the gaff on the scale. The odds are with Nam at -140 to a +120 comeback on Adashev.

Bantamweight Bout: Zarrukh Adashev (3-1, 138.5 lbs.) vs. Tyson Nam (18-11-1, 135.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Nam is two inches taller and has three inches of reach advantage, plus Adashev missed weight. They touch gloves, Adashev fighting southpaw. Bit of a rush from Adashev is partially blocked. Hard inside leg kick from Adashev but Nam with a counter right and Adashev is OUT before he hits the mat.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Tyson Nam via KO, punch, at :32 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Nam for his work this evening. Mic time for Nam, he says he feels good and is ready to do it again. He talks us through the finish, noting he thinks he can always hit harder than the opposition. Asked about the future he also says he’d be willing to fight next week.

A lovely counter to the inside leg kick here. Adashev lands a hard kick, but as he looks to follow up with punches Nam intercepts him with an overhand right that sleeps him.

Julia Avila had a successful UFC debut last year which gave her a three fight winning streak, she’s trying to extend that here and possibly make a run in a fairly shallow division. Gina Mazany went 1-3 in her first UFC stint, but a lack of available bodies and a win outside the promotion have earned her a second shot on the big stage. Mazany is trying to make the most of the second chance with a win here. Avila is a prohibitive -650 favorite to a whopping +475 payout on Mazany.

Women’s Bantamweight Bout: Julia Avila (7-1, 135 lbs.) vs. Gina Mazany (6-3, 136 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Avila is an inch taller while Mazany has half an inch of reach advantage. Southpaw for Mazany and they touch gloves. Mazany opens with a couple of lefts and gets a clinch. Knee to the body from Avila and she winds up unloading in close quarters along the fence, Mazany turns her back and the ref winds up waving this off.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Julia Avila via TKO, knee and punches, at :22 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Ms. Avila for her work this evening. Mic time for Avila, she’s almost in tears she’s so happy. She says her knees are good weapons and the finish was just her letting her animal side out. She says she wants to fight soon, she doesn’t want another nine month layoff.

The knee to the belly that Avila lands starts the end for Mazany, Avila never lets her off of the hook after landing it.

Merab Dvalishvili has gone 3-2 in the UFC and is currently on a three fight winning streak, he’s hoping to earn a shot at the top fifteen with a fourth consecutive win here. Gustavo Lopez took this fight on incredibly short notice after Ray Borg withdrew to deal with family matters but he’s got a three fight winning streak and chance to take out a rising force in the division. Dvalishvili is your prohibitive favorite at -900 while the +600 comeback on Lopez likely tempts a few gamblers.

Catchweight Bout: Merab Dvalishvili (10-4, 139 lbs.) vs. Gustavo Lopez (11-4, 140 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Dvalishvili has an inch of height and reach on Lopez. They touch gloves to get us going. Some circling early, Lopez is backing Dvalishvili to the fence then lands a calf kick. Dvalishvili moves to side control, Lopez is gassing. Some short knees to the body, and Dvalishvili grabs a scarf-hold neck crank but he’s too perpendicular to really get it right now. Dvalishvili moves up more around the head with his grip, moves to a scarf-hold armlock but loses it and Lopez is up and free. Double leg from Dvalishvili into side control, Lopez flips him over and avoids it. Another takedown attempt from Dvalishvili, Lopez goes for a guillotine and Dvalishvili has to bail to try and escape. Lopez keeps coming forward, lands a body kick but Dvalishvili catches it and takes him down again. Dvalishvili moves to the ride position, Lopez back up along the fence and the round ends with a mat return from Dvalishvili.

Lopez is able to escape and they’re upright again. They trade some punches, Dvalishvili gets another single leg but Lopez tries to granby roll, Dvalishvili smothers that for top position. Lopez kicks him off, Dvalishvili misses some haymaker rights and ends the fight standing over Lopez.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Dvalishvili, possibly 10-8, 30-27 Dvalishvili overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Merab Dvalishvili via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-26 x2)

No issues with the 10-8 third, possibly the second but that seems wrong to me. Mic time for Dvalishvili, he says things change for him all the time so this wasn’t too different and wishes the best to his original opponent Ray Borg and his family for what they’re going through. He says he loves to fight and got the job done, then thanks his coaches and training partners. He calls someone out, but there was music playing over it and I missed it, ah it was Sean O’Malley.

That does it for preliminary action, though we’re still on ESPN/ESPN+ for the main card.

Mariya Agapova is making her UFC debut here on the back of a two fight winning streak and hoping to take a win off of a somewhat known fighter in Cifers. Hannah Cifers took this fight on short notice, she fought just a couple of weeks ago in a losing effort against Mackenzie Dern, but is back and hoping to get on the winning side of things again. Agapova is your favorite at -365 to a +285 comeback on Cifers.

Agapova jumps to the back, gets a standing body triangle, locks up a choke and Cifers taps as they fall to the mat.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Mariya Agapova via Submission, rear naked choke, at 2:42 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Ms. Agapova for her work this evening. That was a mugging, Cifers stepped up on short notice but was up a weight class and the size disparity was evident, to say nothing of the superior skills Agapova brought. Mic time for Agapova, she feels amazing and says the fight was cool. She is happy, this is a dream come true and she mentions staying in America after losing on the Contender Series to commit to this dream. She talks us through the finish, then says she’d like to fight Shayna Dobson soon.

Jordan Espinosa has gone 1-2 in the UFC and currently finds himself on a two fight losing streak, now he’s hoping to just get his UFC record back to the .500 mark while getting a little job security in the process. Mark De La Rosa has gone just 2-4 in the UFC and is currently on a three fight losing streak, he likely needs a win to keep him his job as a fourth loss probably ends his UFC career. Espinosa is your -170 favorite to +145 for De La Rosa.

Andre Fili has gone 2-2 in his last four fights and is coming off of a loss, he’s trying to avoid his first ever losing streak and prove he’s still a potential talent in the division. Charles Jourdain has gone 1-1 in the UFC but is coming off of a fairly notable win over Doo Ho Choi, now he’s trying to take out a more proven UFC veteran and cement his status as a prospect of note. The odds are with Fili at -230 to a +190 comeback on Jourdain.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Andre Fili via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)

I can see Fili getting the second, no issues with him getting the win. Mic time for Fili, who doesn’t understand how he keeps winding up in split decisions. He puts over Jourdain as a hard hitter but notes that he’s Samoan and has a chin. He mentions his hand being a little damaged but not hurt, though having to block like that kept him from firing counters. Watching highlights he puts over his team and feels like he’s finally getting back to having fun instead of following strict game plans. Asked about what’s next he wants a big name, he doesn’t think he’s a regular UFC fighter and wants to prove how good he is.

Charles Rosa has traded wins and losses while going 3-4 in the UFC, he’s coming off of a loss and is hoping that pattern holds for at least this fight so he can get back on the winning side of things. Kevin Aguilar has gone 2-2 in the UFC but is on a two fight losing streak, now he’s trying to regain his previous form and prove he’s still got plenty of gas in the tank for a run in the UFC. Not sure about 29-28 for Aguilar, but that third round was competitive. Rosa puts over Aguilar on the mic, he was surprised by the split but he got the win so he’s happy. He says winning in the UFC is the best feeling in the world.

Karl Roberson has gone 4-2 in the UFC and is currently on a two fight winning streak, he’s hoping to move that to three in a row and start moving up the ranks. The fact that he missed weight badly for this fight doesn’t help that case, but a memorable win will help him move beyond that. Marvin Vettori has gone 4-2-1 and is also on a two fight winning streak, Vettori is trying to take a step towards the rankings as well with a memorable performance here. Vettori is your favorite at -240 to a +200 comeback on Roberson.

Roberson is just covering up, but he’s doing so well so far. Vettori to the ride position, Roberson on his knees. Now Vettori reaches over, gets the choke under the chin and Roberson has to tap out.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Marvin Vettori via Submission, rear naked choke, at 4:17 of Round 1

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Vettori for his work this evening. Vettori gets an interview, he gets cut off a lot due to his language so I’m going to do my best here. He mentions how hard he’s trained for this. He puts over his coaches and knew his grappling was superior then says he thinks he’s the best in the world. Asked what’s next for him he says everyone is dodging him, but he wants to climb to a title shot and wants a rematch with Adesanya given how close their fight was. To close he wants his first post fight bonus for that one.

Jessica Eye has gone 4-1 since returning to flyweight, only losing in highlight reel fashion to champion Valentina Shevchenko. Eye is coming off of a win but missed weight for that fight as well as this one, leading one to ask real questions about her future in this weight class. Cynthia Calvillo was on track to have a meteoric rise in 2017, but a loss to Carla Esparza followed by injuries as well as missing weight in two of her last three fights prompted this move up to flyweight. Calvillo is trying to immediately put the division on notice by taking out the currently top ranked flyweight. Calvillo is your favorite at -140 to +120 for Eye.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Cynthia Calvillo via unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46 x2)

Eye might have taken the first, but at a minimum I think 3-2 Calvillo without much controversy. Mic time for Calvillo, she feels great given the short notice and the state of the world. She talks about having to get ready for five rounds on a short schedule and taking the first round to mostly warm up. She says her cardio was pretty great and notes how hard she trains. Asked what she wants next she says whoever or whatever, she wants to stay busy more than anything.

On that note, UFC on ESPN 10 comes to a close. It was lackluster on paper, and the event played out in a fairly pedestrian manner. Please don’t be fooled by the early finishes, two of those were horrible mismatches and one featured a fighter with just 4 MMA fights. Next week we’ve got heavyweight action in the main event, and a better overall card on paper to look forward to. We’ll be reviewing this event and previewing that one on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast, so you’ve got that to look forward to. Also a boatload of fights got announced, so there wont be a lack of content for the show. I’ll be back next week, until then thanks for reading, stay safe out there, and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
