During a recent heated Twitter exchange with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanaya, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones admitted that a longstanding story that he once hid underneath a cage at a gym in order to avoid a drug test is in fact true. However, Jones claims he wasn’t hiding from United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) officials for using performance enhancing drugs. He’s claiming he was hiding because he had smoked marijuana and didn’t want to get caught for it.

Adesanya initially tweeted at Jones on Thursday (Oct. 8), “Well you sleep under the cage so…Get in your tighty nighty and go to underneath the cage like the ugly putrid troll you are.” He later added, “Fun Facts! I napped under the cage in 2010 cuz I didn’t wanna waste gas going home so I stayed at the gym till evening training. Jonathan stayed under the cage to hide from USADA during a random drug test. This is facts. Y’all must have forgot.”

Jon Jones later fired back, “Brother explain your t****. I was hiding from Nevada state Athletic Commission, not USADA and that was years ago.. I had just smoked a blunt and was afraid I would fail my test for weed. That’s the actual truth. Now everyone knows everyone.” Jones’ remark on Adesanya’s chest has been with regards to people talking about his uneven peck sizes in his match with Paulo Costa at UFC 253. Following the fight, Adesanya denied he’s ever used steroids in his career during an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s ESPN MMA show.

The story about Jones hiding from drug testers was originally shared by Chael Sonnen during an appearance on a Joe Rogan podcast several years ago. The UFC began partnering with USADA for out of competition random drug testing for fighters on the roster in 2015. Jones has tested positive in the past for PEDs by USADA. His last failed test was July 2017 after his second fight with Daniel Cormier, where he failed a test for turinabol. He was suspended for 15 months as a result.
