Jon Jones UFC - Chael Sonnen

411’s Official MMA Rankings: Light Heavyweight Division

Light Heavyweight Division (205 lbs)

1) Jon Jones (22-1, 1 NC)

Height: 6’4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Daniel Cormier – No Contest (originally – Win via KO (punches)) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Ovince St. Preux – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 197: Jones vs. OSP – April 23, 2016

– vs. Daniel Cormier – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier – January 3, 2015

– vs. Glover Teixeira – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 172: Jones vs. Teixeira – April 26, 2014

– vs. Alexander Gustafsson – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson – September 21, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Alexander Gustafsson – UFC 232 – December 29, 2018

Comment: He’s back! Perhaps the most controversial fighter in MMA history, Jones is returning next month with a chance to regain the light heavyweight title he had taken from him by the UFC. If you do not consider his failed drug tests or his illegal conduct outside the octagon, there is no question he is the greatest MMA fighter in history. If he avoids repeating history, there’s a potential path for him over the next year that could end up with him being the UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champions (with wins over Gustafsson, Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar).

2) Daniel Cormier (22-1, 1 NC)

Birthday: March 20, 1979

Height: 5’9

Weight: 239

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Derrick Lewis – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 230 – November 3, 2018

– vs. Stipe Miocic – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 226 – July 7, 2018

– vs. Volkan Oezdemir – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 220 – January 20, 2018

– vs. Jon Jones – No Contest (originally a loss via TKO) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Anthony Johnson – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 210 – April 8, 2017

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Cormier will continue as a two-division champion for about four more weeks until the UFC crowns its new light heavyweight champion in a fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. Yes, one man who has not fought since July 2017 due to failing another drug test and the other who has not fought since May 2017 due to injuries (to himself and other potential opponents). Titles mean nothing in modern MMA, so no sense in getting tied up in them.

The biggest question relates to Cormier and his immediate future. He has publicly talked about March as when he wishes to retire (when he turns 40-years-old) but also wants to fight Brock Lesnar. Lesnar may not be willing to take a break from WWE until later on in 2019, if at all. In the meantime, does Cormier have interest in another fight with Jones? If so, at light heavyweight (where Cormier has lost two fights to Jones) or at heavyweight (where Cormier is undefeated)?

3) Ryan Bader (26-5)

Height: 6’2

Birthday: June 7, 1983
