Melvin Guillard Dedicating Bellator 149 Fight to Kevin Randleman
Melvin Guillard spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Derek Campos at Bellator 149 and more. Check out the highlights:
On dedicating his fight to the late Kevin Randleman: “At the end of the day, I’m going to steal the show. The things leading up to the fight don’t really matter. It’s who gets in there and steals the show and who puts on a fight for the fans. People know I’m about to bring it, man. This fight is important to me right now, it became a tribute to my best friend and long-time mentor, Kevin Randleman. I lost him this past week and it was shocking. I just spoke to him three weeks ago and was expecting to see him soon. Now that’s not going to happen. This fight has a lot of meaning for me.”
On meeting Randleman for the first time: “I was already dying my hair because of the show, but I got to meet Kevin for the first time in person when I fought Joe Stevenson. He was actually working Joe’s corner. I was cutting weight, I’ll never forget. I was in the running room and I was star stuck. I couldn’t get my words out. I told him, ‘Man, I’ve been dying my hair, but you’re my idol.’ I even went so far as almost getting the eye tattoos on my back when I was coming out of high school. So, he was like, ‘Man, if anybody’s worth of carrying on the tradition, it’s you. You’ve got my blessing.’ That’s why everybody’s asking, ‘Have you ever think about changing it to a different color?’ No. It’ll always be blonde. I got it from my mentor, Kevin Randleman.”
