Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Jimmie Rivera – UFC 219 – December 30, 2017

Comment: Cruz is undefeated in non-title fights. 24 career fights, 13 of them non-title. He will match up against Jimmie Rivera, who himself has not lost any fight in nine years. For Dominick, he will have to show he can remain an elite fighter or be slapped with the label that he’s finally on the downswing of his amazing career. A win at UFC 219 should mean a rematch with whomever wins the title fight at UFC 217 between Garbrandt and Dillashaw. A loss should still set him up in a rematch with the loser of that title fight.

Comment: Earlier this month, Caldwell became the 6th bantamweight champion in Bellator history by beating Eduardo Dantas (the only two-time champion in the division).

Looking ahead at possible first contenders, the list features familiar faces: former champion Joe Warren, Leandro Higo and former UFC contender Michael McDonald. Warren lost a split decision to Dantas in December and returned this summer to defeat Steve Garcia by unanimous decision. Higo was 17-2, when he stepped in on short notice when Caldwell pulled out of an April fight with Dantas, before losing to the then-champion by split decision. He returned this month earning his 18th win by topping Joe Taimanglo after three rounds. McDonald has not fought since last summer and was has not won a fight since he choked out Masanori Kanehara in January 2016. He has signed with Bellator and is scheduled to debut in December against a yet to be determined opponent.

Next scheduled appearance:

Comment: Dantas will turn just 29-years-old in February and is a 10-year pro. He debuted in Bellator in 2011 as a 22-year-old and was considered a phenom who could lead the division for years. After winning the tournament and title, he took a fight in Brazil for Shooto and was knocked out in 96 seconds by Tyson Nam (remember him?). He returned to Bellator about six months later and defended his title twice over the following year. He lost the title to Joe Warren three years ago this month, but came back for a second run with the title including a win over Warren in his first defense. However, he lost the title again, this time to Darrion Caldwell (not-so-ironically, a wrestler).

Has Dantas fulfilled his potential?
