Will the fifth time finally be the charm? ESPN reports that former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has signed to face reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Numragomedov for an upcoming UFC pay-per-view event on April 18, 2020. The fight card will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Tony Ferguson and his representatives at Ballengee Group met with UFC executives last Friday (Nov. 29) in Las Vegas to formally sign the deal for the matchup. Previously, Nurmagomedov signed his bout agreement earlier in the week.

The UFC was looking to book the matchup for an April date in New York. Ferguson still needed to meet with the UFC last week in order to make it official. UFC President Dana White and Ferguson’s management team later confirmed the matchup.

The one drawback is the fight has been booked several times before and always failed to materialize. This will be the fifth time Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson has been booked in the UFC. Previously, Nurmagmedov had to withdraw from the matchup in 2015 and 2017 due to an injury and a weight cutting injury. Ferguson had to withdraw from the fight in both 2016 and April 2018 due to injuries of his own. Hopefully, the fight will finally move forward and take place this time.

Nurmagomedov is undefeated in his pro MMA career and is 12-0 in the UFC. Ferguson has won his last 12 fights inside the Octagon. His only UFC defeat was a decision loss to Michael Johnson in May 2012.

The upcoming UFC card in April is still not yet numbered because the UFC has not yet fully revealed its event schedule for early next year. The event will be broadcast live on pay-per-view via EPSN+.
