War Machine Sentenced to Life in Prison For Christy Mack Assault

June 5, 2017 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Barring parole, War Machine will be in jail for the rest of his life for his assault of ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her boyfriend Corey Thomas. MMAjunkie reports that the former MMA fighter was sentenced today for his conviction on twenty-nine charges in connection with the assault, which included sexual assault, coercion, battery by strangulation and kidnapping. The jury in the case hung on charges of attempted murder.

The judge sentenced War Machine (fka Jonathan Koppenhaver) to life in prison with the possibility of parole in thirty-six years. He will be seventy-one when parole becomes eligible.

Mack made a plea to the court during the sentencing hearing, saying, “I do know that when he gets out he will kill me.”

On Friday, War Machine’s attorney pled guilty to eight lesser domestic battery charges in the hopes that it would lessen the punishment. The fighter also spoke during the hearing, saying that he hates himself for committing the assault.

The assault in question happened on August 8th, 2014 when War Machine broke into Mack’s house and discovered her and Thomas together. He hit and choked Thomas, then began attacking Mack. Thomas suffered a broken nose, dislocated shoulder, scrapes, bruises, and bite marks while Mack was left with several injuries including broken teeth, a fractured rib and a severely ruptured liver. She had to undergo plastic surgery to correct some of the damage.

During the trial, War Machine’s lawyer infamously tried to claim that Mack’s work in adult films could be seen as a form of consent in regard to her claims on the stand that he abused her and attempted to rape her in the months before the attack, arguing that the two have had rough sex in the past. That was quickly shut down by the judge.
