Barbara Broccoli, the main producer for the 007 franchise, has confirmed that they won’t be switching up the gender of their titular superspy. Broccoli, who has worked on the Bond films since 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me and is the co-owner of 007 production shingle Eon Productions, spoke with Variety for a new interview and discussed the future of the franchise now that Daniel Craig is on his last film, No Time to Die.

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” said Broccoli of the character. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

Broccoli noted that she doesn’t lose sight of the weight of her role as the producer for the franchise alongside her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, saying, “For better or worse, we are the custodians of this character. We take that responsibility seriously.”

No Time To Die will star Craig, Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Jeffrey Wright, Ana de Armas, Lashana Lynch, David Dencik and Christoph Waltz. Cary Fukanaga is directing from a script he co-wrote with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Scott Z. Burns and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It releases on April 10th.
