Warner Bros. have announced that the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, directed by the debuting Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo, has been set for a release date of March 5th, 2021. Shooting is set to begin in Australia later this year.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” said Producer James Wan. “Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

The film is an adaption of the long-running video game franchise of the same name which dates back to 1992. The bloody fighting game was controversial in the 90s for it’s gory ‘fatalities’, in which losing fighters were dismembered or beheaded as part of brutal finishers. A previous adaption released in 1995 was received poorly by critics in spite of it’s box office success, and it’s spawning of the famous Mortal Kombat theme.
