According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aardman Animations is working on developing a sequel to the 2000 hit stop-motion animated classic Chicken Run. The original holds the record as the most successful stop-motion animated film ever. Aardman plans to partner with StudioCanal and Pathe, which co-financed the original with DreamWorks Animation and distributed in Europe. Sam Fell (Flushed Away, ParaNorman) will direct with Paul Kewley (Shaun the Sheep Movie) producing. Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, who wrote the first film, will be back to write the sequel. Aardman’s co-founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton are executive producing.

The original film was co-directed by Lord and Nick Park. It earned $106 million in the US and $225 million worldwide. It followed a group of chicken trying to escape a farm before they are killed an eaten by the owners. It included voice actors like Mel Gibson and Timothy Spall. The film has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globe awards. It is likely the sequel will go into production at Aardman’s Bristol studio after production wraps on Shaun the Sheep Movie Farmageddon, which arrives next year. A sequel has been discussed for some time, and fans started an online petition for it last year.
