Variety reports that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is considering not having a host at all for this year’s Academy Awards after Kevin Hart’s exit. Hart was announced as the host last week but voluntarily stepped down when homophobic jokes years ago resurfaced. Having a show without a host is only one of the options that the Academy is considering. They were said to be “blindsided” by Hart announcing his departure. The Board of Governors will meet tonight to talk about the issue.

A comedy agent claims that “they’re freaking out” while another source claims there were no backup plans from the Academy or ABC. They are said to be “gun shy” about going with anyone who could be considered edgy, but a safe choice could be bad for the annually declining ratings. The Awards brought in 25.6 million people in March, 19% down from 2017. If there is no host, it would instead focus on “a bunch of huge celebs, something ‘SNL’ style, and buzzy people” to keep the show moving. A group monologue was also considered.

The Academy was hoping that Hart would apologize for the tweets and show signs of remorse without actually leaving the show. They thought he needed to do a better job of addressing the jokes that made fun of AIDS and included shots at the trans community. He spoke of his personal growth but did not initially apologize. He only apologized later when he backed out of the show. The comments caused anger from the LGBTQ community as well as GLAAD.

A talent representative wondered why Hart wasn’t properly vetted, since he’s been asked about the jokes in the past. The rep said: “My clients are bummed. They’re bummed Kevin didn’t stay the course and serve as an example. It dampens the experience, hopefully [the Academy] can pull it together so we can focus on the excitement.
