The road for Dark Tower to get back on the screen just got rocky, as Amazon has passed on the pilot for the series. Deadline reports that Amazon will not move forward with the series, which is based on Stephen King’s book and comes from showrunner Glen Mazzara and MRC.

MRC is now shopping the scripts to other potential companies, according to the site. It is the latest blow for a franchise that stumbled on the big screen with the 2017 feature film, which grossed $113.5 million worldwide against a $60 million budget plus a spendy marketing campaign. (The new series is an independent adaptation from the film.)

Amazon chose to go with a traditional pilot instead of a straight-to-series order due to the reputation that the novels have of being notoriously difficult to adapt. Amazon has two other big franchises coming to the small screen in Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time, and felt like the pilot for Dark Tower wasn’t on those shows’ level.
