Deadline reports that Antoine Fuqua is once again in talks to direct the remake of Scarface for Universal Pictures. Things are said to be “looking good.” The film was supposed to come out on August 10 of this year but it no longer has a release date. Diego Luna was set to star but now it’s unknown if he will due to a changing timeline, which resulted in scheduling conflicts.

The new film has a similar story but it’s set in modern Los Angeles. The most recent script comes from David Ayer, Jonathan Herman and Joel and Ethan Coen. It will be produced by Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions and Marty Bregman (producer of the 1983 film), with Scott Stuber executive producing. Universal executive VP Jon Mone and VP Jay Polidoro will oversee for the studio, with Brian Williams overseeing for Clark.

Fuqua was previously attached to direct but dropped out due to schedule issues. Ayer took over but had the same problem and also dropped out. This would be the third version of the story after the 1932 and 1983 versions. Fuqua will be ready to go after he’s completed post-production on The Equalizer 2.
