The Russo Brothers recently told EW Morning Live that there is a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who is “secretly gay” and that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will announce it “pretty soon.” The character will be “openly gay” according to Joe Russo.

Of course, Joe Russo played the MCU’s first openly gay character in Avengers: Endgame. The character had a brief scene where he spoke about his snapped, same-sex partner while at Captain America’s support group. That character sparked some backlash, including from io9 writer Charles Pulliam-Moore who felt the character was an “inconsequential afterthought.”

Feige has responded to io9 about that criticism, stating that that character wasn’t meant to be the first gay hero and said more LGBT prominence is coming “soon”:

“That was never meant to be our first focused character. That was just meant to be a matter of fact and a matter of life and a matter of truth. And I liked it that our hero, Steve Rogers, doesn’t blink an eye at that fact. It is just truth and is heartbreaking for his loss and for the life he’s trying to put back together. It was never meant to be looked at as our first hero. I guess it’s the first reference so it does, of course, get a lot of attention.

“We haven’t been shy about saying that that’s coming and that there’s much more prominent LGBT heroes in the future … [it’s] coming soon.”

So that leaves the question — which current MCU hero will be the first openly gay character?
