Ben Affleck’s decision to step away from The Batman drew a lot of attention at the time, and the actor has explained that his personal life had a lot to do with the decision. Affleck spoke with the New York Times for a new interview and discussed why he stepped away from first writing and directing the film, and then from starring in it.

Affleck explained that at the time of the film’s development his marriage to Jennifer Garner was coming apart and that he was heavy in his alcoholism, saying, “I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems.”

He went on to say that the issues during production on Justice League weighed on him and said of The Batman, “I showed somebody The Batman script. They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.'”

Affleck’s decision to step aside cleared the way for Matt Reeves to step in to write and direct, and Robert Pattinson to star. The film is set to release on June 25th, 2021.
