Bird Box Could Have Had Much Darker Ending

Bird Box has become a major hit for Netflix and spawned controversy over the Bird Box Challenge, but the film could have ended up having a much darker ending that may have impacted the reaction to it. In the film, the movie ends with Malorie (Sandra Bullock) leading Boy and Girl to a school for the blind where she finds her doctor, Dr. Lapham, and several people and children, all of whom seem safe. Malorie gives the two kids names and the film ends on a happy note.

However, in the book that the film is based on, the story ends with Malorie leading Boy and Girl to shelter, but the community is comprised of people who gouged their eyes out on purpose for safety. Malorie decides to not gouge Boy and Girl’s eyes out so they keep the blindfolds on.

“The movie is slightly more positive. The movie is, in many aspects, different from the book, but it’s also very rooted in the book. The book also has a kind of positive ending and I would not have wanted to do an apocalyptic movie that didn’t have a hopeful ending,” director Susanne Bier told Polygon about the ending. “I’m not particularly interested for the audience to leave, from the cinema or their own screen, with a kind of completely bleak point of view. That’s not really what I believe in.”
