Black Panther 2

It looks like Marvel Studios will be dominating the box office yet again this week. Per Box Office Mojo, Marvel’s Black Panther is expected to reign at the No. 1 spot at the box office again this weekend.

Currently, it looks like Black Panther will finish the weekend ahead of the new Warner Bros. release, Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider brought in $9 million for its opening day. The film earned a “B” CinemaScore rating with opening day audiences. I didn’t score well with critics either, with a certified Rotten rating of 49 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tomb Raider is currently projected to finish with only $22-24 million for the weekend. Meanwhile, Black Panther is currently estimated to finish with about $27-28 million for its fifth frame. That would put the film over $605 million domestically.

So far, that’s not looking like a very good number for Tomb Raider, which was made for an estimated $94 million production budget. The film was likely made with the hopes of starting a new film franchise. That doesn’t look like it will be in the cards right now for Lara Croft, who was portrayed by Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander in the new film. For those keeping score at home, the highest domestic box office ever for a Marvel Studios film was 2012’s The Avengers at $623 million. Black Panther should easily overtake that in the coming weeks.

We’ll have the full box office results later tomorrow.
