Warning: Spoilers follow for Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel is tearing it up at the box office and now the original, more ambiguous, ending has been revealed. In an interview with ET Online, editor Debbie Berman discussed the original way that the ending went down, with Carol Danvers’ reason for departing into space being less explicitly clear than the final cut. The released ending features Carol handing Nick Fury the all-important pager first seen in Avengers: Infinity War, saying goodbye to Maria and Monica and then flying away to help Talos and the Skrulls find a new homeworld.

“I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film,” Berman said. “It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring. Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years. So we added Talos and his family in their spaceship waiting for her, and they all fly off together. It gave her more of a sense of purpose and made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about, and for a more specific mission. It gave more resonance and closure to her final moment in the film.”

Captain Marvel is currently in theaters and has grossed $196.9 million domestically and $559.5 million worldwide through Thursday. You can read 411’s review of the film here.
