The upcoming introduction of the Eternals into the MCU will touch on why the group didn’t help the universe take on Thanos, per director Chloe Zhao. The most recent trailer for Eternals revealed that the group were ordered not to interfere with anything not involving their evil counterparts in the Deviants, and Zhao told Total Film that it will be explained more clearly in the film.

“[The audience] will understand why,” Zhao said. “Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that. You’ll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There’s a reason why that’s the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem.”

The MCU film is set to release on November 5th with a 45-day exclusivity to theaters and stars Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, and Angelina Jolie as the titular cosmic beings, as well as Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman. It is described as follows:

“Marvel Studios’ Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.”
