The classic 1980s Christmas horror film Silent Night, Deadly Night is getting a remake, which is set to release in 2022. Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios announced on Wednesday that they have picked up the remake of the slasher film and will release it next year. The original film’s producers Scott Schneid and Dennis Whitehead of Wonderwheel Entertainment are on board to produce alongside Anthony Masi of MasiMedia. Jake Seal, Terry Bird, and Jamie R. Thompson.

Silent Night, Deadly Night made a ridiculous amount of headlines when it was released back in 1984 over its plot, which centered on a child who becomes a serial killer in a Santa Claus suit later in life after he witness his parents get killed in a similar way. The film was heavily marketed with Santa Claus imagery, some of which aired during family programming on television. It was pulled from theaters a week after its release, but was still profitable in that short amount of time with $2.5 million against a $750,000 budget. It spawned four sequels and a very loose remake, Silent Night, which released in 2012.

“The continued desire for horror content and the ongoing success of the genre meant it was the perfect time to be able to offer up this chilling revival of the iconic title,” said Wonderwheel.

“We are thrilled to be working with the original producers as well as Orwo and Black Hangar and are committed to honoring nostalgia for the original while offering surprises for new audiences to discover and embrace,” Masi added.
