Deadline reports that Constantine Film is set to remake the 2003 mutant cannibal horror movie Wrong Turn, with series creator Alan McElroy returning to write the script. Mike P. Nelson (The Domestics) will direct.

The first film starred Eliza Dushku, Jeremy Sisto and Emmanuelle Chriqui. It earned $30 million worldwide from a budget of $12.6 million. The 20th Century Fox horror franchise went on to feature five more films, with the final entry, Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort, arriving in 2016. However the series has been direct-to-video since the second film.

The remake is said to be a “timely and topical mediation on society and its issues.” Here’s a synopsis: A cross-country hiking expedition puts a group of friends in the land of an inclusive society, where they soon discover they are under a different rule of law, and may not be the victims they thought they were.

Robert Kulzer will produce with Martin Moszkowicz executive producing.

Kulzer said: “Alan’s re -interpretation of his own work and Mike’s vision are a frightening reflection of our world today: one person’s American dream is another’s worst nightmare.
