Batmwoman is headed to the Arrowverse. The CW announced during their upfront presentation on Thursday that the character will appear in December during the yearly crossover event, with Stephen Amell making the announcement.

Amell said, “We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’ll be doing another crossover event this fall on The CW, and we’ll be introducing a new character. For the very first time appearing, we’ll be fighting alongside Batwoman, which is terrific. The crossover is going to make it to air in December. I need to leave right now and start filming it.”

CW head Mark Pedowitz added that the character will allow them to effectively add “the city of Gotham into the Arrowverse…This will be another full-throttled, action-packed event.”

Batwoman is the identity of Kate Kane, first introduced as Kathy Kane in 1956’s Detective Comics #233. Created by Edmond Hamilton and Sheldon Moldoff, she was killed off in 1979 and then re-envisioned as Kate Kane during 2006’s 52 event series. The character in the new continuity was a lesbian, which was kept in the New 52 relaunch in 2011. In that continuity, Kate Kane is the daughter of two career military people, Colonel Jacob Kane and Captain Gabi Kane. Her mother and sister died in a terrorist attack and, after some time in the Marines, she returned to Gotham where she became known as a socialite. Inspired by Batman, she puts her resources to becoming her own masked vigilante and is often at odds with the Caped Crusader.
