David Tennant, who played The Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who from 2005-2010, was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He said the fact that The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) is female will be irrelevant on the show.

He said: ““Whenever the Doctor changes, there’s a backlash because that’s a character people love. People get very affectionate about the Doctor they knew. You know, sure, Jodie is from a different gender than anyone who has gone before, but that will be irrelevant almost immediately once she takes the part. It’s about finding the right performer at the right time, and that’s Jodie, without a doubt.

Tennant previously worked with Whitaker on three seasons of BBC’s Broadchurch. He said he was “delighted” to see her take the role.
