Marvel revealed at the end of the San Diego Comic-Con panel last month that Blade is coming to the MCU. While the Daywalker’s solo film won’t be a part of Phase 4, he’s already been cast, as Mahershala Ali is set to play the titular vampire killer. Marvel won’t have to look very far if they want a director, Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch (who is likely to score a huge hit with this weekend’s Hobbs & Shaw) is willing to do it. He even has a special connection to the original 1998 film.

He told Screen Rant: “I love Blade. And it’s actually one of the first stunt jobs that I was in, the original Wesley Snipes one. I was a stunt performer in that movie. I was in the blood club. You remember that scene? Yes, dancing around in the recycled special effects blood. It was great. Mahershala is such a great actor, and I’ve been fortunate to work with some great actors, and I never go wrong that way. Having him play that role is a big deal and would be really exciting. So, yeah, I would love to have that conversation.

Depending on what Marvel decides to do with Deadpool now that they have the rights to X-Men again, he could end up working for them anyway on the next installment of that franchise. He noted last month that he’s yet to hear from Disney or Marvel about it yet.
