Deadpool 2 Targeting $150 Million-Plus Opening
Deadpool 2 is set to open predictably huge when it arrives next month. THR reports that current tracking for the film has the X-Men spinoff sequel aiming at a $150 million opening weekend or more when it arrives on May 18th.
There’s a lot of good news in that for Fox. First off, the number is ahead of the $132.4 million start for the original Deadpool when it bowed in February 2016. While many might have expected that would be a given, sequels sometimes have a difficult time topping their originals — especially when the first film was a particular phenomenon.
Also worth noting is that this is still pretty early tracking. Highly-anticipated blockbusters, particularly in the superhero genre, have a habit of exceeding their early tracking. Cases in point: Black Panther and Wonder Woman. Black Panther was tracking at $100 million to $120 million three weeks before its release and ultimately started with $202.4 million. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman started with $100.3 million despite tracking for $65 million.
The new film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, Julian Dennison, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams and Karan Soni.
