Marvel Studios isn’t cutting Deadpool short, moving forward on a third film in the franchise — and it will be R-rated. Deadline reports that Marvel has tapped sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin to write Deadpool 3, with Ryan Reynolds set to reprise his role as the titular Merc with a Mouth. The site notes that writer meetings have been taking place over the last month and Reynolds met with writers to hear pitches for the next film. Reynolds and Marvel both saw the Molyneuxes as having the perfect take for what they wanted to do.

As of now, the film is in early development still but it’s a positive step forward for the franchise, which had a lot of people wondering how Marvel would move forward. The first two films were gigantic hits for 20th Century Fox but Marvel as a Disney subsidiary has shied away from the R-rated superhero films that other studios have been more willing to experiment with. However, Deadline reports that the film is expected to be rated R such as the previous two installments. There will likely be a new director as well, as David Leitch’s schedule for 2021 is full. However, since the film does not have a production start date set, the door is still open for Leitch to return if it can be worked out.

The Molyneuxes are writers and EPs for Bob’s Burgers as well as creators and showrunners on FOX’s upcoming series The Great North which has already been renewed for a second season despite not premiering in February.
