Disney has found a director to take on their planned Tron sequel starring Jared Leto. Deadline reports that Garth Davis, best known for his Oscar-nominated 2016 film Lion, will helm the latest film in the cult sci-fi franchise.

The film is using a script written by Jesse Wigutow. Davis, who also directed 2018’s Mary Magdalene, is said to have aggressively sought the directing job on the film and won over Disney executives with his vision.

Tron started with the groundbreaking 1982 film, which starred Jeff Bridges as a software engineer who hacks into his former employer’s mainframt. He ends up being sucked into the digital world where he must compete in combat games. The film was by no means a hit, but it developed a cult following thanks to its innovative special effects work. That let to Tron: Legacy, which released in 2010 and starred Bridges, Garret Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde. Tron: Legacy was a moderate financial success with $400 million worldwide against a $170 million production budget plus a hefty marketing campaign, but reception was mild and Disney ultimately chose not to continue with a third film at that time.

At this point, a greenlight has not been given on the new film, which is still in active development. But bringing on board of a director is a good sign that we may see the franchise revived again.
