The Hollywood Reporter brings word that New Line Cinema has hired Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks) to direct the sixth film in the Final Destination series. The relaunched franchise was originally intended for HBO Max when it was announced back in January.

Craig Perry will produce with Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Jon Watts and Dianne McGunigle. Watts also wrote the treatment for the new film. The script is being written by Guy Busick & Lori Evans Taylor (Ready or Not, Scream).

While it’s unknown what the new movie will be about, the series revolves around a protagonist getting a vision of an upcoming disaster. They cheat death, along with several others, only for Death to arrange them to be killed in grisly ways. The last movie, Final Destination 5, came out in 2011.

The process of finding directors took up most of the year as over 200 candidates were submitted. Lipovsky and Stein were chosen for their ideas and passion for the series. They were already set to get the job and then had “the Zoom call to end all Zoom calls” happened, and that’s how they got it. The actual pitch involved a submitted sequence in which they used pre-recorded footage and visual effects to actually kill one of the directors mid-call. The fireplace caught the room on fire in the video, and after putting it out, the ceiling fan broke off and decapitated one of them.
