Disney Becomes First Studio With Five $1 Billion-Grossing Films in a Year
Disney has been having an unprecedented year, and that continues as they set a new record for $1 billion-grossing films. As Deadline notes, Toy Story 4 crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide on Thursday which gives the studio five films to hit that level this year. No other studio has come near that level in a single calendar year.
The studio may have more once it’s over, too. Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are set to open in November and December, and both could easily cross that mark. Frozen grossed $1.276 billion back in 2013, while three out of the four last Star Wars films have crossed that mark (RIP, Solo).
Toy Story joins Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Captain Marvel and Aladdin as Disney films to hit the $1 billion mark this year. Only one other film has crossed that margin, Spider-Man: Far from Home which is a Sony production but still connected to Disney as being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
