In the wake of Dark Phoenix’s failure at the box office, Disney is giving the New Mutants film some serious side-eye. Variety has a report about the developments at the studio regarding its absorption of 20th Century Fox, which has resulted in a few rocky film releases. Dark Phoenix, Stuber, and last week’s The Art of Racing in the Rain have all been released from Fox but through Disney since the release, and all have been failures at the box office.

According to the report, Disney laid off the marketing team on Dark Phoenix and they did not aggressively promote the film, presumably in order to avoid throwing good money after bad. The studio is said to be optimistic about handling Fantastic Four and X-Men films going forward through Kevin Feige, but is “unimpressed” with with the horror-toned New Mutants and expects that it will have limited box office potential.

At this time, the oft-delayed New Mutants is set to release on April 3rd, 2020. There were reports that the film may end up on Hulu before it got the new release date, but Disney has been adamant that the film will release in theaters. The film’s production budget is not known, but it is expected to be far below that of the typical X-Men blockbuster due to its more contained nature.
