The Hollywood Reporter reports that while Disney remains committed to a theatrical release for Black Widow, Disney CEO Bob Chapek left the door open for the theatrical release to be scrapped when he told investors during Disney’s earnings call on Thursday that they are “watching very carefully to see whether that strategy needs to be revisited.”

“We are still intending for it to be a theatrical release,” Chapek said. “We are going to be watching very carefully to see whether that strategy needs to be revisited.”

Among the factors Chapek said Disney will consider are the number of theaters open in the United States on May 7th, when Black Widow is currently set to open, and what audience demand to see a movie in the theater is at that time.

Disney has remained committed to the theatrical experience, but Marvel has other projects tied to Black Widow which are currently having to sit on the shelf. Disney did release Mulan to streaming on the same day as its theatrical release for an additional cost, and will also be doing so with Raya and the Last Dragon, while Soul was released on Disney+ for no additional cost.

Black Widow was originally scheduled to be released on November 6th, 2020.
