Dr. Dre Producing Marvin Gaye Biopic

Variety reports that Dr. Dre is producing a biopic about late soul singer Marvin Gaye and has already secured the rights to use his music from Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Gaye was famous for his songs like “What’s Going On,” “Sexual Healing,” and “Let’s Get It On.” He was a successful Motown artist before he was shot in 1984 at the age of 44, after an altercation with family at their Los Angeles home.

This is the latest attempt to give Gaye his own biopic, with names like F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, Scott Rudin, and actors Jesse L. Martin and Lenny Kravitz trying to do so. None of the attempts had been authorized by Gaye’s family. The most recent attempt was from Jamie Foxx, who got the rights for a limited series in 2016. There has been no progress on that project.
