Moana 2 was announced on Wednesday, and a new report says that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in talks to return as Maui. As noted, the sequel was announced at Disney’s quarterly earnings call for a November 27th release in theaters. While it was unclear at the time if Johnson would be back as Maui, Deadline reports that he is in talks to reprise his role as the character.

The report also clarifies that Auli’i Cravalho is in talks to return as Moana, but those talks are not completed yet. Cravalho will not be playing the character in the live-action film, which Johnson is playing Maui in and is currently set for a June 27th, 2025 release, though that date is likely to shift with the new animated sequel announcement.

Moana 2 is described as follows:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
