The MCU films are sometimes accused of being too formulaic in tone and style, but Eternals director Chloe Zhao says that she didn’t encountered that while making her entry. Zhao is directing the cosmically-based film, which is set to release in February, and told THR that she was surprised by how much creative freedom Marvel Studios allowed her.

“I shot exactly the way I wanted to shoot,” Zhao said. “On location. A lot of magic hour. Three-hundred-sixty degrees on the same camera as I did on [her upcoming drama] Nomadland. Same rigs. It’s a bit surreal. I’m still waiting for the shoe to drop. It hasn’t. I think I got lucky in that Marvel wants to take risks and do something different.”

Zhao noted that she brought a lot of her appreciation for manga into the film, saying, “I have such deep, strong, manga roots. I brought some of that into Eternals. And I look forward to pushing more of that marriage of East and West.”

The film will star Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Angelina Jolie, and Kit Harington and takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame as the Eternals — an immortal race created by the Celestials who have lived on Earth for seven millenia — reunite in order to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.
