USA Today has revealed the first photos from The Legend of Tarzan, featuring Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams, Christoph Waltz as Captain Leon Rom and Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga. The film arrives on July 1, 2016. Here are select quotes from the star and director David Yates.

Skarsgard on the Tarzan parts being told in flashbacks: “It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast. This is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.”

Yates on the role of Jane: “[Jane is] in no way a passive partner to Tarzan. She’s a really strong, assertive, beautifully knowledgeable, very sexy modern woman who can more than look after herself. In a way, it’s a story of two human beings and how they save each other.”

Yates on the look of Tarzan: “Tarzan needs muscles, but it’s more a leaner, longer, more vertical modern man than the square-jawed stereotype we’re used to.”

Yates on creating the environment in the film: “A lot of movies, you have to go to the far reaches of the galaxy to find extraordinary beauty and amazing things. They’re right here on the planet. They exist just a few thousand miles away.”

Here’s a synopsis: In The Legend of Tarzan, it has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
