First Reactions to DC’s Shazam: ‘Fun,’ ‘Tough Act to Follow’ for Avengers: Endgame
The reactions from the first critic screening of Shazam are making their way out on social media. So far, reactions for the new DC Universe film are overwhelmingly positive. You can check out some of the early Twitter reactions from critics below.
Nuke the Fridge’s Luis Lecca gave the movie high praise and even rated it as a tough act to follow for Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. He wrote, “I watched #SHAZAM last night and #AvengersEndgame has a tough act to follow!”
Collider’s Kristian Harloff also enjoyed Shazam, writing: “Thought it was a lot of fun and promised on the premise of big as a superhero film. There were a lot of good moments great chemistry and @ZacharyLevi was having a blast and it showed. All the kids were fantastic, sets up a nice tone for DC.”
The DCEU film opens in theaters on April 5. Here’s an official synopsis for the release:
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
Well, I’ve seen it, and now I absolutely cannot wait to talk to everyone about #Shazam on Thursday.

#Shazam is big, goofy, lovable, and unlike anything DC has done before. Definitely in the vein of Tom Hanks' BIG, but with superhero action & lots of Batman and Superman references. I dug this film so much I wanted to give it a bear hug at the end. DC's movies keep getting better pic.twitter.com/WQJgo61gMg

#SHAZAM is like Superman 1978, The Goonies, & Harry Potter all rolled into one movie!

The #Shazam social embargo dropped, so I can say that I really liked this movie! Lots of laughs, some real heart, and a great classic superhero story. I think audiences are gonna love it and DC fans are REALLY gonna love it. Unquestionably atop the DCEU with Wonder Woman for me. pic.twitter.com/9JsGPSJU6Z

Shazam! is the superhero film that you never knew you needed. Zachary Levi was born to play this role. Ridiculously entertaining & non-stop fun from start to finish. Loved every character & all of the pop culture references. This is what going to the movies is all about. #Shazam pic.twitter.com/SxCcCTy2ZB

With Shazam, David F. Sandberg proves once again that he is a remarkable filmmaker that has seamlessly made the jump from small budget horror to big budget blockbuster. Shazam naturally embraces diversity without being showy plus it has great messages about family too. #Shazam

Finally allowed to say that #Shazam was fantastic! Full of heart and pure childhood wish fulfillment. It's funny and the tone is exactly right. @zacharylevi is perfect in the role, and so is @asherangel, who I'm convinced is @maisie_williams' brother! pic.twitter.com/DXhp2ZBteR

Billy’s foster family in #Shazam is so great, the stand out for me was @FaitheHerman! She brought such a richness to Darla. Honestly you guys are gonna fall in love with them pic.twitter.com/zGRJl6KWjH
