CBM reports that production has started on Warner Bros.’ Joker, which will be directed by Todd Phillips. It’s described as “the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. [Todd] Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The press release about principal photography beginning revealed the full cast, including Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. Phillips will also produce with Bradley Cooper through Joint Effort and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman. The director of photography is Lawrence Sher, with production designer Mark Friedberg, editor Jeff Groth and costume designer Mark Bridges. The only mention of DC is that the script is “based on characters from DC.”

Deadline adds that Cullen will play Thomas Wayne, the father of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The role was previously set to be performed by Alec Baldwin, who was forced to back out.
