Deadline.com reports that Warner Bros. has optioned the film rights to develop and produce an animated movie based on the Funko line of collectible figures. Warner Bros. Animation Group is working on the project.

WAG Executive VP Allison Abbate is going to oversee the partnership with Funko on behalf of WB. The company is currently developing new theatrical animated films with Space Jam 2, Scoob, and Tom & Jerry. WB has previously had a long ongoing licensing partnership with Funko for various properties, including DC Comics, Harry Potter, and more.

Speaking on the news, Abbate said on Funko, “Their fresh take on pop culture make these figurines incredibly appealing to fans of all ages.”

Funko CEO Brian Mariotti added: “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.”

It should be noted that while the Pop! Vinyl figures is probably Funko’s most popular line, the company has many different types of products and toys in its catalog other than the Funko Pops. The report did not specify the film would be based on or inspired by the Funko Pop! Vinyl line.

Considering Warner Animation Group has had success in the past with the LEGO animated features, one imagines that this movie could work in a similar fashion, considering that the company creates products for various licensed properties from sports teams, to movies & TV shows, video games, professional wrestling, and “Ad Icons.”

WAG director and designer Teddy Newton and Mark Dindal are reportedly writing the story for the planned feature. It does not yet have a title or planned release date.
