There are things in this world that you just don’t do, like challenging Khal Drogo to The Slap Game. Game of Thrones’ David Benioff knows that rule first-hand (pun, unfortunately, intended). During a new Game of Thrones backstory video from HBO, the showrunners Benioff and D.B. Weiss recalled a time when Benioff challenged Momoa to the game and ended up losing in a very brutal fashion.

For those who are unfamiliar, The Slap Game involves two people taking turns trying to slap the back of each other’s hands. One player gets to keep going until the other can pull his hands away, making the slapper miss. The two then swap roles.

Benioff recalls that the game happened in a bar when Momoa came back to film a cameo for season two. Benioff, hearing Momoa mention that he had beat someone in the game, threw out the challenge. As he and Weiss describe, Momoa was so good that he just kept hitting and hitting, to the point where everyone in the bar shut up and watched until Emilia Clarke noticed that Benioff’s hands were swollen. The co-showrunner returned home to the US the next day and ended up having to go to the hospital due to the fact that his hands had swollen to twice their size.
