It seems like almost everyone has weighed in on the infamous coffee cup that appeared in Game of Thrones’ final season, and now the showrunners have done their part. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke with Japanese outlet Star Channel and discussed the cup, which appeared in the “Last of the Starks” episode of season eight. If you recall, the cup appeared in the celebration at Winterfell after the Night King’s army had been defeated, positioned right near Danaerys.

“It’s tradition that you make a little mistake, because only God can do anything perfect,” Benioff said (per Vulture). “We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle. So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was embarrassment; ‘how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?’ And then, eventually, it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now.”

The cup got a lot of attention when it was spotted, and even HBO had a little fun with it when they released a statement the day after the episode which said, “In response to inquiries from those who saw a craft services coffee cup in Sunday night’s episode of GAME OF THRONES, HBO states, ‘The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.'”
