ESPN‘s E:60 interviewed Game of Thrones actor Halfthor Julius Bjornsson, who portrays Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, on the hit dark fantasy series. During the interview Bjornsson, who is also a competitive strongman and weightlifter, admitted to having used steroids in the past.

Bjornsson is the third actor to portray Gregor Clegane in the series. He joined the cast in Season 4. Regarding steroid use, Bjornsson stated, “Yes, I have. When you want to be the best, you do whatever it takes.”

The interview was recorded earlier in 2017, but it aired for the first time earlier today (Apr 14). When asked to elaborate on his use of performance-enhancing drugs, Bjornsson declined to elaborate. He stated, “Can we just skip those questions?” Bjornsson is a reigning World’s Strongest Man competition winner. The competition officially prohibits the use of PEDs. However, the extent of the competition’s drug testing program is unclear.

Bjornsson started weightlifting at the age of 19. He claimed the title of Iceland’s Strongest Man in 2011. The weightlifter and actor also claimed he never failed a drug test during competition. He said he plans to compete in this year’s competition later this June.

Regarding his health, Bjornsson added, “When you are putting yourself through all this. I’ve always thought about, ‘What if I pass away?’ It would be very hard to know that I left my family too soon. I want to be there for my family. I want to be there for my daughter. But this is my life. This is what I enjoy to do.”

Game of Thrones returns for its eighth and final season later tonight on HBO. This season will feature Bjornsson reprising his role as The Mountain. You can also check out a clip from his E:60 interview below.
