The new Halloween sequel is looking to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise, according to recent tracking. Variety reports that the David Gordon Green-directed film, which is serving as a direct sequel to the 1978 original, is aiming for at least $45 million for the three-day weekend when it opens on October 19th.

Of course, early tracking usually ends up being on the low side for blockbusters, particularly when the film is getting good reviews (and thus good early buzz). And that’s the case with Halloween, which has an 85% average on Rotten Tomatoes right now. That is easily the best-reviewed film in the franchise outside of the original; the previous best was 1998’s Halloween H20 at 53%. The film is believed to potentially get as high as $55 million or more for the first weekend.

The film will almost certainly smash the previous opening weekend record for the franchise, which is the 2007 Rob Zombie remake. It brought in $26.4 million in its opening weekend.
