HBO’s series adaptation of The Last of Us has a director in Kantemir Balagov. THR reports that Balagov (Beanpole) is set to direct the pilot for the series, which comes from Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog, the company that produces the video game franchise.

The series was originally set to be directed by Johan Renck, who worked with Mazin in Chernobyl. However, Renck was forced to bow out due to a scheduling conflict which brought Balagov into the picture.

The Last of Us is based on the hit game franchise that takes place long after a pandemic has devastated the globe, turning humans into infected monsters while survivors kill each other for dwindling resources. The games follow Joel and Ellie, two survivors trying to make their way across the US. The series will be available on HBO and HBO Max and is described as follows:

Based on the critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us,” developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation® platforms, the story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
