Hulu is in development on two series which will kick off a shared universe of John Grisham adaptations, according to a new report. The Wrap reports that the service is at work on series based on Grisham’s legal thrillers The Rainmaker and Rogue Lawyer, which are being designed to both stand alone or be viewed in conjunction with each other. The storylines will intersect from time to time and feature some shared characters, with the idea being that viewers could choose to watch one or both series.

Michael Seitzman and Jason Richman are writing the two series and executive producing alongside Grisham and Christina Davis of Seitzman’s Maniac Productions. ABC Signature Studios is producing.

The idea of shared universes has been made into big business by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they have been part of television for a long time. In addition to franchises like Law & Order, CSI, the Arrowverse and NCIS, spinoffs have long developed the idea of multiple shows existing in conjunction with each other.

The Rainmaker previously received a film adaptation in 1997, with Francis Ford Coppola behind the camera and starring Matt Damon, Mickey Rourke, Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, Jon Voight, and Mary Kay Place.
