Hulu Dropping Basic Subscription Price After Netflix Price Hike

January 24, 2019 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Hulu is taking advantage of some users being upset about Netflix’s price increase by announcing that they’re doing a price drop. The company has announced that starting Saturday, its basic subscription price will lower from $7.99 to $5.99. The announcement comes on the heels of Netflix announcing an increase to its subscription rates, which saw its most popular plan go from $11 to $13 a month.

The now-$5.99 plan is Hulu’s most popular plan and is an ad-supported tier that includes commercial breaks. The service’s $11.99/month ad-free plan will not be affected, nor will the $12.99 plan bundled with Spotify as Spotify does the billing for it.

Also announced was a price increase on one of Hulu’s plans: the Live TV service plan. With a new agreement with Discovery, Inc. in place that adds new channels, Live TV will now cost $44.99 compared to the previous $39.99. However, the add-ons of enhanced DVR and multi-screen viewing are both down from $14.99 to $9.99 per month.

And thus, the streaming wars continue. Your move, Reed Hastings.
