Variety reports that Hulu is working on a series based on the life story of RuPaul (real name RuPaul Andre Charles). J.J. Abrams will executive produce through Bad Robot. It’s called Queen and will be a fictional take on the fashion star’s early career in 1980s New York all the way to present day where he is a world-famous drag queen and LGBT icon. The model will also executive produce with Queen writer Gary Lennon, Bad Robot’s Ben Stephenson and World of Wonder’s Tom Campbell, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

RuPaul became famous in the New York club scene in the 80s before releasing the dance song “Supermodel (You Better Work.” The song and video became big hits on MTV. He then became the first drag queen supermodel when he signed with MAC Cosmetics. He also hosts The RuPaul Show on VH1 and RuPaul’s Drag Race (and its spin-offs) on Logo and VH1.
