The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Idris Elba is set to create and star in the Netflix comedy series Turn up Charlie. The news was announced at a press event in Rome by chief content officer Ted Sarandos. Netflix gave the show a straight-to-series, eight-episode order, with each episode running for half an hour. Elba will also executive produce.

The series follows Charlie (Elba), a “struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.”

It will be written by Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran and Victoria Asare-Archer. Gary Reich, Tristram Shapeero, Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito will executive produce. Georgia Lester will write and be the supervising producer. Shapeero and Matt Lipsey will direct, with Gill Isles producing. Also producing are Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Elba’s Green Door Pictures. Production begins in May in the UK, with a premiere date yet to be named.
