Stephen King’s IT was very nearly set to begin shooting, with only three weeks before production was to begin. And now it appears as if the film(s) may not be moving forward at all. THR reports that Cary Fukanaga (True Detective) will not direct the project after a disagreement with the studio over the film’s budget.

The film was originally planned to be two movies but New Line Cinema reportedly wanted to compress it into one for budget reasons, which Fukanaga was not on board with. With the film so close to entering production and Will Poulter signed to play Pennywise, it’s possible that it may just be delayed until a new director is found. However, Stephen King took to Twitter to suggest the film may not be moving forward at all:

Fukanaga wrote the script for both films, which could also be a complicating factor. As soon as we have more information we’ll let you know.
