James Gunn is in a unique position as a man directing both Marvel and DC films, and he’s calling on fans of both for a show of unity. Gunn took to Twitter to commemorate the start of filming on Suicide Squad and shared images of a gift that Marvel’s producers sent him as filming began: an “adventure book” featuring images from Guardians of the Galaxy’s production.

Gunn, who is set to return to the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when he’s done with The Suicide Squad, then appealed to fans of each property saying that they “have a lot more in common than they do not” and asking them to enjoy what they enjoy without tearing the other down:

As I’ve said so many times, at the end of the day, Marvel and DC fans have a lot more in common than they do not. I am now and have been for almost all my life, both. Maybe you like one more than the other — that’s cool — but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them all or that you have to tear the other down. I know that I and my partners at both Marvel and DC believe that what’s good for one studio is generally good for all: spurring each other on daily with heartfelt, spectacular, and innovative entertainment that keeps audiences around the world loving movies based on or inspired by sequential art. #marvel #dc
Let’s go, team(s). ❤️

The Suicide Squad is set to release on August 6, 2021, with Guardians 3 expected to begin production sometime next year.
